Pepper spray famously works all the time, disarms a shooter instead of making them panic and fire randomly, and doesn’t give you a false sense of security.

I don’t hate the idea in principle. The article cited critics who are afraid of false positives. False alarms and wrong targets are the weakest point of something like this. Something like this is obviously going to have teachers assault students at some point.
Also the pilot it like 8 schools. It seems like you’d have to get really lucky to be in the right school at the right time. While there’s a disturbing amount of gun violence, you can’t really predict where it’s going to happen. Also, there’s probably a deterrence factor where you’re less likely to try it at a drone school.
Also, at worst this will be a greater crackdown because you’ll usher in monitor drones that are always around and you’ll just have this haunting whirring sound and that won’t be evenly distributed. Not to mention the slide forward of what is an acceptable reason to sick a drone on a student. Guns and knives, I see it. But some kids going to be fighting with fists or wrestling. They’ll yell at a teacher or something and get drone rammed.
But damn, in only country where this happens to have a way to get students to drop the weapon really quickly without killing them is really nice. Unlimited drone ramming on active shooters (but at what cost?).

idk i think you can defeat these with PPE if you’re doing a whole premeditated school shooting. It’ll be deployed on mundane things that didn’t need intervention at all, as you said.

You should. In principle the idea should be to start with “what leads to so much violence in America” and not start with “what do we do when they already have the gun out”.
The “both” approach takes more resources, there’s a zero-sum dynamic between prevention and response.
