Lmao, “no reasonable customer would expect the thing with the word “rib” in the name and shaped like ribs to be made of rib meat.”

Sure, it’s obviously not literally a rack of ribs but clearly they are trying to associate it with a fancier product by way of naming and shape it like that. Probably wouldn’t sell as well if it was called the McTripe. That’s pretty deceptive and misleading.

Is it that big of a deal? Not really, but also it’s just one example out of a mountain of examples of McDonald’s misleading or manipulating customers.

The wild part about the almond milk thing is that is existed since the middle ages and was used as a dairy milk substitute even back then and it’s been called almond milk for nearly the whole time. And yet now it’s somehow a problem.

Yeah. It’s weird how some of these industries fly into a panic and seek to suppress and mount campaigns against something that is an alternative, often a better alternative in many ways.

They get all litigious over calling something “milk” if it’s not dairy. They preemptively get states to outlaw what is likely one of the only serious ways to address global warming: cultured meat. Which is just bonkers - it’d be like Big Carbon getting states to simply outlaw wind and solar preemptively. Imagine, getting prison time for selling cultured meat.

These industries all have assets and the knowledge to get things onto shelves already; they could simply invest in the future as well.

mcdonalds is far from the only one that uses a similar ‘rib shape’. they all do, from food service to the grocery store freezer to gas station food… many even use ‘rib’ in the name, too.

mcdonalds has been ‘faking it’ for 45 years… how about the others? as long? even longer?

the generic ‘pork’ ingredient listing could very well contain “rib meat”.

      there’s no case here.

mcdonald’s only crime is the price they charge for them. the ones literally next door at the gas station here, and which are available all the time not just ‘for a limited time only’, cost less than one-third the price and are at least a mcrib’s equal if not better.

I wonder how many companies that produce boneless chicken wings actually include any wing meat.

I appreciate that there are those that seek to hold companies to truth in advertising and certain standards, but as an adult in her 50’s I’ve never once thought that a McRib would contain rib meat. It’s processed pork that’s shaped like ribs. If anything, that’s more accurate than chunks of chicken breast sold as boneless wings.

Someone did sue them once, iirc, which is why they are often called Wyngs or some such nonsense. I’m not sure about other products but for some reason as long as it’s one letter off it’s fine?

The irony to me is if you think there are wing meat in that or rib in a McRib, you might not be literate enough to even notice it’s spelled wrong.

This attitude of taking pleasure in calling people who fall for false advertising stupid or illiterate is why we’re in the golden age of scams. Intellectually disabled and illiterate people do exist, yes, and they deserve to be protected by society not mocked. It’s not ironic that they wouldn’t notice the wrong spelling; it’s the whole point of doing it. That’s exactly why the regulation is necessary.

Oh come on, who is really doing the scamming here?

Who’s going to make most of the money on this? It will be scummy lawyers, that’s who. We shouldn’t be handing a whole bunch of money to scammy lawyers just because they can imagine a hypothetical idiot that doesn’t know that the McRib is processed meat. Just do an image search on McRib and tell me that there is any way someone could think that isn’t processed meat. How the fuck would you have a sandwich that has bone in the meat?

What are even the damages on this? How would you determine who are the idiots that bought a McRib thinking it wasn’t processed meat?

If you’re really against scams, you should be against these lawyers using the legal system to scam a bunch of money for themselves.

What’s next, the makers of Goldfish crackers should be sued because hypothetically there could be an idiot out there somewhere that thinks they contain goldfish meat?

We aren’t fighting back against the corruption and scaminess in our society by just allowing some other group of people run the scams.

FWIW I have had a beef short rib sandwich before. The ribs were slow braised until falling off of the bone and then given a rough chop before getting put on a bun. Granted, that makes more sense for beef than pork and is never gonna happen at McDonalds and can’t happen at a McDonalds price point. Sorry, I’m extremely pedantic about food.

basically cat food coming out a tube.

ninjaedit: I’m about to rail on food ignorance on Lemmy. Your comment sparked, but this entire thread and many like it are the cause. Lemmy likes to think we’re smart and yet swallows (har har) so much fucking ignorance without researching or educating, it’s infuriating.

Ignorance about how food works is off the scales.

Pet food is indeed held to a lower standard than food for humans.

You may not like chicken that has been put into a blender and then cooked into a patty, but that is essentially what a McChicken or McNugget is. It’s like ground beef, only a bit finer grind. So if you don’t like the chicken products, you should barely tolerate hamburgers.

But I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest that you’re probably one of the ones that thinks that burgers by most places are fake. Everything is fake! FAAAAKE!

                Well, it largely isn’t.

For example, the rumour that they put wood in grated parmesan cheese. Cellulose is IN wood, yes, but it is a large part of what makes up vegetables, period. And it’s used to keep the cheese from clumping.

It’s like people who put egg and breadcrumbs in meatloaf to give it a certain texture and taste profile. Yes, sometimes “fillers” are added to meat products - FOR THE SAME REASONS. Is meatloaf “FAAAAAAAKE”?

Sure, rail against lower quality meats being used if you’d like and go but some wagyu and grind it yourself and make your own burgers if you want, but a lot of these products are using more of the animal, meaning it wastes less EDIBLE FOOD helping keep cost down and slightly better for the environment as each animal we kill to eat can go farther.

And MOST of the people complaining about all this “bad health” will go out to a sit-down restaurant and consume 1800+ calories of fat and sugar and salt or 1200+ calories for a “coffee” drink and do FAR more damage to their health than any fucking fast food ever could.

The misinformation just gets really fucking old. We can’t fix the ACTUAL problems because people refuse to fucking learn what the ACTUAL problems actually ARE.

Well tenders are breast meat, so I’d certainly hope nobody is mislabeling them as wings. But I guess that’s the point of the entire conversation, because fake boneless wings (or wyngz, or whatever the fuck companies call them to avoid being sued) can contain whatever is cheapest and easiest for the company.

The issue here is that apparently McDonald’s is charging a premium price for the sandwich even though it is not being made with premium meat though the advertising implies that it is. Does Banquet charge more for meals with fake ribs? Honest question since I don’t eat any of this stuff.
