@pmjv Is anyone willing to put their head over the parapet and explain why scrollbars were taken from us? Like, we know why the web has to be entirely light grey on slightly lighter grey - it’s to protect us from “eye strain”. Is there an equivalent rationalisation for scrollbar erasure?
Because everything is being designed as a narrow webpage with infinite scroll served up by the algorithm. The bottom of the page no longer exists so there’s no definable range for a scrollbar.
@Couldbealeotard Yeah, that explains substack, which is where I notice this the most. There’s supposed to be a huge scrum of comments continually popping up at the bottom for the algorithm to helpfully sift for you. The fact that nothing is actually there on any blog I read is not a factor in design decisions.
You already got a bunch of answers, but the real one is - because User Interfaces stopped being designed by programmers, and started being designed by art school graduates.
My guess is the mouse wheel made them less necessary to the point where form over function folks won out.
Though I do still see a scroll bars in Firefox and steam. Some auto hide when the mouse isn’t hovering over the pane they scroll, but they are there. Similar on my windows work machine.
Might be more of a phone thing where accelerated swipe scrolling is a thing. And because they decided to get rid of the back button on the pixel, they made interactions with the side of the screen mean back, which would make interacting with scroll bars annoying (though I’d rather have a fucking back button and not have that annoying behaviour when I do a movement that looks like swiping from the edge, which happens a lot in chess whenever I want to move a piece on the edge of the board.
HEAR, HEAR! We have super duper extra wide monitors so why stick a bunch of scrollbars in all that never used horizontal space!
Scrollbars, toolbars, docks, app switchers, app launchers. Use the width.
Unless there is a functional reason, make controls vertical.
MS’s 21st century design shows it’s lost the plot.
Example #1: the Office Ribbon is an example of a broken design, because it can’t be moved to vertical. The old toolbars could. They didn’t know how to use their own product’s older versions.
(LibreOffice’s ribbon can be vertical. It works fine that way.)
Example #2: Now, Win11’s taskbar has been updated so it can be vertical again, showing the developers didn’t know how to use the old tool. So the copy is a poor, half-broken one.
Counter-example: I used GNUstep’s NeXT-style vertical menu bars. They don’t work very well IMHO.
Acorn’s RISC OS ones work superbly.
NeXT borrowed the Dock idea from RISC OS, & did it better. But for menus, they did it worse, IMHO.
Other people: Anime body pillow.
Me: Scroll bar body pillow.
I am so down for chibi analog nowhere.

Thank you for inventing doooomscrolling! I will be sure to do it a lot.
No problem!
Doom scrolling specifically calls for no scroll bar since it’s infinite.
There can always be a scrollbar. It goes to the bottom, then bounces up when more engaging content has been loaded for consumption.
Oh yeah fair enough, it’s rare enough that I forgot about it!
You open a new tab and search inside. ... Inside you find 32 doomscrolls.Thinking of Maud you forget everything else.
Thank you for forgetful content!
I miss the old scroll bars. I was scrolling on a recipe website and while there was a bar on the side it was so slim and streamlined I had to squint to find it!
I think
I might just be old
compounding the issue is that there’s no guarantee that the miniature scroll bar on the right side is actually usable, it’s often just a visual indicator. but it’s so goddamn small that even if you try to use it you can’t be sure that you’re not just hitting the pixel next to it
So often I go to click it, and click elsewhere then the page zooms and I have to scroll around frantically trying to find where I was again.
you’re not alone!
I was lamenting to my partner recently, my extreme disappointment in the sudden vanishing of the Scroll Bar. Love this.
my pleasure
Fake pmjv, the eyes are inside the heads
This is AI
How can I invest!?
how much money do you have?
the fucks a money
What else am I gonna do with it?
I’ll have to ask my AI accountant. Is rouble a stablecoin?
russian ruble?
Oh no, I wouldn’t trust that, these ones say приднестровский рубль
belarus obviously, nobody invests in russian ruble anymore (although the new trend is polish zloty)
I miss the old polish zloty.
Libre Writer, an app literally designed around scrolling, uses a mobile style scroll bar on Desktop and it infuriates me. Want to scan 25 pages by holding the down button? Tough shit.
That sounds pretty dumb!
They are an extinct species now.
:(

I just used one!
Awesome!
Oh no! pmjv got replaced by pmjv!
nooooooooo
wait, you can probably stylize these with userChrome.css right?
don’t think so. you can stylize them with gtk in .config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css
epic
there’s an about:config option to customise them. i think there are five built-in styles, plus native, you can set the width, and you can set them to always show.
