  • I feel like the movie had character development in at least two of the ancient vampires and one of the new vampires.

The series seemed like just another sitcom. Not terrible, but not as fun as the movie. Unfortunately when you do a sitcom you’re constrained by convention in a lot of ways (i.e. it’s tougher to make character development.)

There’s a worthwhile comparison to the UK and US versions of The Office.

  • SCENE: early 90s. I’m at a computer, desperately grinding on an LPMud. I have a packed suitcase at my feet because I have to catch a flight but I’m SO CLOSE to maxing out my main character and reaching the top “wizard” level. Grind, grind, grind, grind, finally I reach it! With fifteen minutes to go til the very last minute I can make the plane! I spend like 10 minutes walking around the MUD being the top level and chatting with people, then finally I run off and just barely catch the flight. I relax for a couple weeks. No computer access because it’s the early 90s. I finally get back home and sign on to the MUD but… it’s gone! WTF?! I ask around and it turns out the MUD got shut down bc the admin was running it off his work computer and his work finally caught on to all this weird network traffic! FML now I gotta do all that grinding again!

Actually the admin was cool, they were setting up a new MUD and said they’d start me out at wizard level, but I was like nah I already spent too much time on this, lel. And I never played MUDs again.

  • I’m thinking this through, myself.

    • there are people, companies, and systems that are making the world a worse place, though people may disagree on exactly what/who those are.
    • a fair number of people on Lemmy/Piefed believe that GenAI as promoted by companies like OpenAI is one of those things that are making the world a worse place.
    • to such people, using GenAI for convenience does not excuse anyone from contributing to companies/systems that are making the world a worse place.

So I guess if someone honestly believes that GenAI is not bad, then they are being morally consistent when they use it. However, if they’re making an infographic, the point of it may be lost on those who believe that GenAI is bad and thus have a morally consistent aversion to it.

Now, IS GenAI really that bad? That argument seems to be raging elsewhere in this thread.

    Recently, @albbi@piefed.ca asked:

At what point did Garfield become about doing the least amount of drawing possible?

To help answer that question, I superimposed panels 2 and 3 (at 50% transparency) of today’s comic on top of panel 1 to see what changed and what was constant:

As we see, even in this comic where there is some movement, Garf’s gut and feet remain a constant anchor.

  • Here are a couple “cult” movies:

    • Hardware (1990) - not a “good” movie, but never boring and very worth watching. Great soundtrack, fun cameos, several interesting ideas.

    • Johnny Mnemonic (1995) - the best really bad cyberpunk movie. A very fun watch, if you’re sufficiently protected from cringeing to death. Apparently there’s a 2022 black and white cut that has a much better feel, but I’ve never seen it.

    • Videodrome (1983) - it’s got lowlifes, it’s got high tech (for that time and place), it’s got urban dystopias, and it’s got evil corporations. I’d argue it’s “proto-cyberpunk”. Irregardless, it’s one of the best SF horror movies ever made. Yes, right up there with Alien, arguably better bc it has more to say about how technology mediates reality and bc it really gets in your head. Heh.
