A wide-ranging leading man who earned critical praise, he was known to be charismatic but unpredictable. At one point he dropped out of Hollywood for a decade.
One day last year I saw a comment by Steve Albini about a proofreading symbol. It turned out to be the last reply post he ever made. He was dead the very next day. He died at 61. That’s not too much older than me.
I wish Tony Soprano had said - “Every single day the grim reaper gets closer. Whaddya gonna do… Paulie! Is lunch ready yet?”

The guy who speaks first is a bit of an asshole. And around Albini’s age too. He must have gotten a bit of a chill when he heard the news. Albini speaks second.
I don’t miss copyediting by hand on paper in the slightest, but I do miss being able to set little preemptive stet dots underneath bits of text I expected a proofreader would later attempt to mess with.
Stet is a note I make on recording track sheets for things that sound unusual but are intended. Such a perfect, economical word.
Technically this “stet” reply post is Steve Albini’s last post on Bluesky. 📝 RIP Steve Albini 😔
Wait, really?! This isn’t an April Fool’s joke, right?
I didn’t think he was that old…
