Famous for its advanced economy, uh, *checks notes* Greece

Y’know, the poor bastards who have been stuck in an austerity death spiral on account of the German-led EU just fucking decimating their ability to import anything

(Skipping excluding China since its easy.)

Greece, a country that had a total economic collapse to the point it was a joke for several years, and was degraded to an “emerging market”, is advanced.

India, Russia, Brasil, Mexico, Turkey, all of which have developed industries with “healthy” agricultural, service, and “white collar” industries and aren’t literal financial jokes, not advanced.

Also, lol at all the baltics being “advanced”. Any economy they have is thanks to the USSR, and they and the west will never forgive them for it. I think the only thing I’ve ever seen “Made in” any of them was some winter hat from Estonia. I know I’ve seen some Polish stuff before. Nigeria once or twice. South Africa too.

Also also, I’m assuming the blue Carribean + African coastal dots are French overseas islands right? A tourism based economy propped up so your colonial overlords can maintain 1/100th of the prestige they had 200 years ago is peak economy.

Also also also, holy shit looking more and more at this map in maddening. Singapore, the fash little state where you can’t chew gum but can commit extreme financial crimes, is advanced. Hong Kong and Macau and Taiwan are advanced (but not China). How the fuck is Canada advanced. Maple syrup and bad pseudo-American culture is not advanced. Same goes for Australia and New Zealand. Sorry “mates”, emus and Peter Jackson films aren’t the bread and butter of a thriving economic system. And why isn’t Greenland included in Denmark if all the French shits are…

None of the gulf states are advanced. Maybe even libs know oil money is going to dry up in the next century. Or maybe its racism. Or is it a lack of “liberal democracy”? Their buddies in Ukraine are also excluded for reasons??? How is israel “advanced” but the Putin epic owners not???

Overall: Didn’t know “‘Service’ based economy with a dying welfare state” and/or “stagnant industrial/agricultural nation” was peak economy. Guess I should have gone to economy 101.

The overseas departments and regions of France are the five departments and regions of the French Republic which are located outside European France (also known as “metropolitan France”). These overseas entities have exactly the same status as European France’s departments and regions.

For that reason if you say France those areas get automatically coloured in too. They are French Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and La Réunion. They are even part of the EU and use euros, the only difference is that they’re not part of the Schengen Area.

How anyone can look at that map and not see it as a huge indictment against the IMF as a serious operation is wild to me

To be even more fair, the division of those concepts is pure capitalist ideology. Only in capitalism can abstract wealth be truer than material wealth

I mean not really, industry is making things and economy is a measure of how things and the making of things are distributed and interact with each other and the people who need things

But then you get capitalist economics which just try to work backwards to justify the ideological conclusion of “it’s good for us to exploit you, peasant”

In a fair world, industry and economy would be two aspects of the same thing, because there would not be a net flow of wealth into some countries at the detriment of the rest. You are right that they are conceptually distinct, I just mean that they shouldn’t be totally divorced. It is the invention of abstract wealth that justifies the extraction of real wealth.

The treatment of economics as purely a question of distribution is another bourgeois ideology that goes back to Marx’s time and earlier
