The man admired by many Spaniards as the finest bullfighter ever seen is recovering in hospital after being gored by a bull during his comeback from retirement.

José Antonio Morante, more commonly known by his matador’s moniker Morante de la Puebla, suffered the injury on Sunday, while bullfighting in Seville. Video footage showed him being lifted off his feet as the bull’s horn punctured his buttock, before colleagues drew the animal away from him by distracting it with their capes.

After initially being in a very serious condition with the 10-centimetre wound, which perforated his rectum, Morante is now recovering.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t root for the bulls, fuck bullfighting, fuck bullfighters, fuck the running of the bulls too. I hope everyone involved gets lifechanging injuries.

Also, while a proctological exam is important at that age, it’s probably better to see a trained MD

    admired by many Spaniards

Sorry but no. Bullfighting is actually very unpopular in Spain. It’s a relic of the past that’s kept on life support by conservative politics.

Very happy to hear he has been gored by the bull. Couldn’t have happened to a worse person. And this is always the reaction of pretty much everyone I know whenever this happens

      Last line:

A poll taken last year by the BBVA Foundation found 77 per cent of Spaniards found the pastime “unacceptable”.

Really? I think these events could be memorialized as a sort of messed up cultural thing to look back upon, but using such a banal word for it feels pretty odd in its own right

Yeah, people don’t often realize the bull is literally being tortured by getting stabbed. Then it’s eventually killed. I mean if you’re killing animals for food do it as humane as possible, but for a show? No.

Super hot take time: giving the bull a chance to go out swining isn’t that much worse than having it put down ”humanely” in a factory, spending it’s last time in a line that reeks of blood.

The real crime is against entertainment. Who am I supposed do be rooting for here? Apparently not the underdog that’s outnumbered and surrounded by a bunch of dirty spaniards with swords and near zero chance of winning.

        Who watches this? Seriously!

I suppose ‘many’ is a relative term. As a pure number of people I’m sure there are tens of thousands of Spaniards who love the ‘sport’. But as a percentage of the population, yeah you’re right - the large majority think it’s stupid and want it gone.

Of course it’s “technically” correct, but I’m a bit tired of Spain being known for bullfighting and people not realizing that it’s actually very unpopular here.

Like also tourist shops in Barcelona still sell bullfighting related articles, even if corridas were actually legally banned for many years in Catalonia (ban reversed by the conservative constitutional court years later). It just shows that this shit is still something people think about when thinking of Spain

It’s just a phrase. For positive stuff you say “couldn’t have happened to a better/nicer person” so that’s the opposite. I can think of quite few worse people that’d deserve to be gored by a bull

    Spaniard here.

Bullfighting is nowadays extremely niche of the extreme right wind retards. No normal perdon liked it, let alone knows the name of that arschloch.

We are happy the bull managed to win a small fight.

Yes, exactly. Because this has never been about “fairness” or “fighting a worthy fight” as supporters of corridas like to pretend. it’s just about slowly torturing to death an animal in front of a live audience.

I say let’s keep it unbanned, but matadores now have to go into the ring empty fisted and no picadores are allowed so that they can’t whittle down at the Bull’s capabilities. Just a 1 on 1 match to the death with both “athletes” at peak performance

The bull will have to be proud from the afterlife, since killing them is the whole point of the performance. But you’re right, he absolutely should be proud, good aim. And since he’s taken down the supposed “finest bullfighter ever”, we can recognize and remember this bull as the now undisputed champion of bullfighting, and the actual finest bullfighter ever. Let him be an inspiration to all future bulls fighting in this deplorable sport. Even though the bulls never win, I will celebrate their efforts to make as many humans lose as possible.

Unfortunately not quite that straightforward. Bulls that win usually still die from their wounds. If they survive, and if the matador believes the bull showed exceptional skill, they can be “spared” and are returned to the owners with a prize (though this is extremely rare)

Not really, that’s only if they survive and are pardoned, which is very rare. The normal thing is for the Bull’s bloodline to be ended
