This is one thing you can’t blame on trump. It’s been happening for a long while now. Even the late, great Lenny Bruce once said that people are leaving the church in droves to find God. I extrapolate this to trumps regime and think…“People are leaving the government in droves to find good”.
Who knew people would not wholeheartedly embrace the church of greed, crime and pedophilia?
church of greed, crime and pedophilia
Catholicism is still one of the biggest religions in the world.
If that’s how most religious people act (Christians love Trump), then I want nothing to do with it. Church sounds awful.
Church is awful.
Sure, there’s the community building, but you can find that literally anywhere. And I mean literally anywhere.
Want to get into niche tech communities? There’s people for that. Want to get into pet stuff? People for that. Want to do car stuff, motorcycle stuff, hiking stuff, swimming, running, jumping, biking, reading, etc. etc. etc.
There’s literally people for that all over.
The only thing church had going for it was the belief that christians were somehow better people than the rest of humanity and you could learn a thing or two by going to church: Well, old pedophile fraudster traitor donnie dispelled that notion for a lot of people.
Not because he, particularly, embodies christianity, but that all the christians in the US seem to claim he does. They’ve got no clothes on right now. It’s so transparent that if something like the antichrist exists, it would be trump, and yet they’re pushing him to the front and praying for him and buying his trump golden bibles and blessing golden statues of trump (seriously).
So to anyone with half a brain, christianity is in decline, they’re exposed as fraudsters, because they chose to back a fraudster/grifter as their #1 guy.
As an agnostic leaning atheist I’m not even celebrating church attendance decline. But a guy with only a compass for profit at any cost was never the one to revive attendance.
I mean, it’s American Churchianity, a for-profit business run by grifters since Azusa Street, and but the latest incarnation of the grift that’s been the hallmark of every organized religion in history. Whatever God or lack of God you might have, people walking away from that trash is a thing to celebrate.
I’m queer and this is a good thing that makes my life better.
As an agnostic leaning atheist I’m not even celebrating church attendance decline.
I am. I’m enjoying every second of it.
I always thought I would be, but the problem now is that it’s still basically there but hyper-decentralized and individually radicalizing in a way that’s totally unbounded by any institution.
Like I think it’s arguably gotten worse because the worst parts of faith clung on (bigotry, insularity, victim complex, magical thinking, etc.), except now wholly decoupled from any of the actually decent teachings churches would normally (nominally) profer like charity, community, humility, etc.
Oh, and as a corollary, a lot of it has just been leeched away by Trump and his cult.
Maybe people are suspicious of hypocrisy
That didn’t stop Christians for the last 1700 years.
Why would they start now?
This is weird. The NY Times just reported that religion is on the rebound…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltxxmesCD74
Not sure what to believe, but I was pretty sad to hear that podcast. A lot of people’s reasons were kind of weird too, like they just lack community and feel isolated and church is a community. I think this is a bad reason to prop up religion. Community is definitely lacking in America, but something else should fill that gap than church.
The rich and powerful want us to believe that religion is the in thing so people will flock to church, mainly to be controlled and managed. Find your own like-minded community.
I much rather pay a guy/gal/LGBTQ-IST to teach my family other things for an hour. Maybe a magic trick. Maybe useful things like knot making or sawing a dress. If its just my wife and I we could use good money on a proper threesome experience with a real wooden hose with pads and a clean strap-for her. I would love for those establishments to be tax free. Sure the room could be very large and have lots of people singing around us too. Or I mean how about we all pay a mechanic to demonstrate how to change a transmission? Maybe we can all change oil while he’s doing it? Like the singing interlude. To each its own.
Because these churches demand money that people no longer have
It’s not that 'Murica is becoming less stupid or religious, they’re just not going places where they are publicly shamed if they don’t put enough money in the collection plate
I know a few people who came to the realization that organized religion is a “money grab.” I’d say there’s hope that the one can influence the other.
I will publicly shame them for asking. Get your shit together flying spaghetti monster.
Religion seems to “concentrate”. A lot if people drop off, some people get more and more hardcore, which draws even more people away. In the end, there are some radicalized groups like the Pius brotherhood, and the pope is well advised to deal with them. A good religious group needs to be uniform in a way, and not a slope of occasional church/temple/whatever goers and a radicalized core group. Most important here is that the leadership is not inside this radicalized core.
And it is completely irrelevant what that religion is based on, the pattern holds: Tele-Evangelists, Taliban, Scientology, the Mullahs in Iran, they all follow the same pattern: radical core and leadership have become identical, and control the rest of the group by means of religion.
The numbers are likely worse for republicans since these are self reported figures. You aren’t going to find many non -billionaires self reporting against the talking points.
The only religion I recognize abhors the weakness of the disgusting flesh and aspires to the purity of the machine.
Reease satan
