A New York sculptor has been left furious after spending $100,000 of his own money to build a lifesize statue of Charlie Kirk, only to find that no one wants to buy it. Sergio Furnari, originally from Italy, had hoped the statue of the deceased far-right activist, which he intends to display in Times Square, would raise “millions” of dollars. Instead, he said he has been inundated by messages from people saying they intend to urinate on the sculpture. To add injury to insult, Furnari recently broke his foot working on the statue, after tripping over a roll of tape in his studio. “Is it cursed? Maybe. I don’t know,” he told the Guardian. Kirk, a far-right political figure who served as a sort of Pied Piper for young Republicans through his Turning Point USA foundation, was shot dead in September last year. He was known for his racist and bigoted views, using his podcast to claim that “prowling Blacks go around for fun to go target white people” and speculating: “If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like: ‘Boy, I hope he’s qualified.’” Despite, or perhaps because of, such beliefs, Kirk became a hugely celebrated and influential figure in Maga circles. In New York City, one of the most diverse, and Democratic, cities in the US, Kirk is far less popular. Furnari said he did not agree with Kirk on “certain issues”. “I wasn’t a fan of Charlie,” he said. “Like one thing that I couldn’t stand about him while he was alive [was] when he was talking about Palestine. [Kirk would say]: ‘Oh no, Palestine doesn’t exist.’ I thought: ‘Well, this guy must be out of his mind.’” Instead, Furnari said he made the statue in an effort to “glorify and to exercise the first amendment, this freedom of speech” – although at points during the conversation, Furnari also said he made it to support Charlie Kirk’s wife; to “glorify democracy”; and to “commemorate a person”. a man sits on a bench next to a lifesize statue of Charlie Kirk Sergio Furnari with his statue of Charlie Kirk. Just to commemorate a moment, you know, a person.” It’s also clear, however, that Furnari, despite no one having commissioned him to make the statue, was hoping to make money. He said he had expected unnamed wealthy figures to donate to him – he spent $100,000 on steel, resin and labor – but that has not come to pass. In desperation, Furnari set up an online fundraising campaign, hoping to raise an initial $150,000, but potentially millions of dollars, which he said would allow him to take the statue on tour. As of Thursday, he had raised $1,400. “I was thinking that it was going to resonate with the world, with whoever, but man, people are strange out there,” he said. “Meaning like, nobody is really coming up with support, especially financial support. So far I’ve spent all my money on this.” Regardless of his broken foot and light wallet, Furnari said he did not really believe the Kirk statue was cursed. “The statue is not cursed. The statue is blessed,” he said, in spite of all available evidence – but he has certainly been left angry. “Things financially are a total, absolute nightmare. It’s like wow. People are cheap, man. You know, people talk, talk – I know lots of people out there, and everybody’s so cheap. You know, like, it’s disgusting how cheap they are.” Furnari’s latest plan is to place the statue in Times Square on 10 September – the anniversary of Kirk’s death. He hopes that will drum up interest, and maybe allow him to recoup some of his costs. Until then, Furnari is left with a 6ft 4in statue of a renowned racist, which he has spent $100,000 making, and which no one wants to buy. Maybe it is cursed after all.
He later added: “Why am I making the statue? The same reason why Michelangelo did the Pietà, or Michelangelo did the David, or Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa. Why? Just to commemorate a moment, you know, a person.”
uh, ok Sergio, lets dial it back from an inspiration worthy of the Old Masters and maybe do a more proportional comparison… like maybe
“Why did they make Air Bud 2?”
I feel like this is just making the Kirk statue sound more important; putting it on the level of Air Bud 2.
As far as I am aware, Air Bud was not a racist asshole so this is a rather insulting comparison
Considering he was raised by a San Diego Italian, chances are high that airbud, was indeed, a racist

drill out the neck and make it a fountain
A Kirk statue with a fountain neck I would put in my garden. Maybe with the eyes x’d out like

Instead, he said he has been inundated by messages from people saying they intend to urinate on the sculpture.
Charge $1 for it and earn the $100k back piece by piss
Get a fence around it and do gender neutral novelty bathroom, $1 to use
*piss by piss

he spent $100,000 on steel, resin and labor
So, like, did you make the thing or did you pay someone to make the thing?
I think he’s probably factoring in the labor as money he could have made working on projects people would actually buy.
Gonna start referring to wasting my own time on pointless shit in amounts of wasted wages for labor.
I spent $0.50 making a reply to this comment. ( ´◡‿ゝ◡`)
Xi pay up
I think it’s one of those systems where you have to reach a certain threshold until you can cash out, idk.
I spent $0.23 making a reply to this comment.
You gotta factor in depreciation on your posting device too
my battery’s max capacity is like 70%
i spent $40.09 writing this comment
“Why am I making the statue? The same reason why Michelangelo did the Pietà, or Michelangelo did the David, or Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa. Why? Just to commemorate a moment, you know, a person.”
BARSthis is the funniest article I’ve read in a good while
Michelangelo got paid lol
The original article has a picture of him sitting with the statue on top of this quote. It’s perfection
Unfortunately I already spent my monument budget for this year on a 5 meter Stalin sculpture.

Only 189 euro? I’d fuckin buy that
Idk if you’re joking but it’s 189 thousand euro
oh
Non-anglo countries use dots as thousands separators and commas as decimal separator
What a kirktastrophe
Also how is this guy real. Bro didn’t even like Charlie Kirk but built a $100,000 statue? What?
Trying to chase that Chud money
“Is it cursed? Maybe. I don’t know,” he told the Guardian

It’s also clear, however, that Furnari, despite no one having commissioned him to make the statue, was hoping to make money. He said he had expected unnamed wealthy figures to donate to him – he spent $100,000 on steel, resin and labor – but that has not come to pass.
I would just not spend 100 large of my own money on a project that nobody commissioned, but I’m just built different
If I had 100M chilling around doing nothing, maybe I would. My spec work project wouldn’t be a statue of a dork ass dead racist though lol
The statue is fine arts
if he’d sculpted his neck just doing that it would’ve sold already
Dude spent so long making the statue that Kirkmania has died and nobody wants to count or uncount neck violence anymore
A true capitalist would have seized the day and been carving a Kirk statue before the bullet casing was cold.
Yeah feel like he could have shit this out in a week or two
Haha, he thought the people mourning Kirk actually liked the guy
Just like the entire Republican base, he tried to profit off of Kirk’s death.
World’s most cherished Republican.

Bro forgot the part where the point of shit like this is to be buddies with a buyer, senator, governor, etc. that will knowingly graft you the money before starting
When I saw the picture of the statue I honestly thought he did it as a joke. Even if it weren’t a statue of some forgettable loser, it looks aesthetically terrible anyway
It’s really bad craftsmanship. The proportions are off. I suspect he struggled working with the material because for a project like this, you’d want to make a cast out of bronze. He was probably thinking he could save money by sourcing iron vs. copper.
Could always convert it to a novelty pez dispenser Might get a few takers then
Load it with strawberry flavor
I was ready to invest, but you lost me at strawberry.
Change it to lemon, and I will come back to the table.
No, the strawberry comes out of the neck, and the lemon is for using is as Margaret Thatcher’s grave.
