Update

Dev is also upset at people who did not like their previous post and continues to insult everyone on the fediverse who does not a reddit like experience to attract investors (ie what the dev calls normies). As well as being completely unapologetic while also still attacking trans friendly instances by calling them a box of matches.

https://lemmy.world/post/49887929

You all have made it quite clear that you don’t want an explanation, or even a mea culpla, or to even try to understand the very real problem I’m trying to address for people who want a nicer place in the thrediverse.

You just want a punching bag.

Maybe when the DM harassment and death threats stop and someone wants to come in with a specific good faith question instead of a shotgun to my face, we’ll talk. Until then, fuck off.

Warmest regards,

Pat

But here’s an explainer for the communities:

I’ve already addressed users and such in the previous post, but I will cover communities here.

In short, think of those communities as a box of matches. In the right hands they’re perfectly safe and useful.

In the hands of a petulant child or batshit crazy adult, they’re dangerous and highly flammable.

Given that the average level of maturity of the loudest people here falls somewhere between “petulant child” and “batshit crazy adult”, giving them a box of matches is a very. bad. idea.

Some of those communities are also completely unmoderated.

This is the deranged ranting of a person who thinks they are a James Bond villain going off on a monologue.

The dude is trying to run a game of becoming a widely used piece of technology indispensable to the ecosystem and then using that position to impose a default experience on the entire thing that shuts out whatever he sees fit to shut out. His goal is literally positioning himself in the position of reddit Admin.

This is literally the reason everyone left reddit and started using decentralised software, and his goal is to re-centralise everything behind his software under the guise of “toxic” filters.

This is an op. I know this is an op because game knows game and I’ve run a few ops in my time.

To be blunt: Tesseract is designed to attract and retain normies. The Fediverse is stuck in a bit of a chicken and egg situation right now. It needs new people, but anyone in their right mind isn’t going to want to stick around because the loudest bunch here are just so off-putting to normal, well-adjusted people. I’ve attempted to resolve this catch-22 situation and am trying, perhaps hamfistedly, to save the Fediverse from itself.

I gotta ask who these mysterious level headed normies who’d be driven away by the fediverse community are given some of the things that list blocks. Like, for example one of the blocked communities is called “Wholesome Yuri”. Who’s being scared away by lesbians? and why would they be a better, less toxic community than the fediverse’s existing one?

I subscribe to wholesome Yuri and the worst you see on there is anime girls kissing. I’m sure a guy like that can find a reason to consider blahaj “extremist” or “tolerating extremism”, but blocking wholesome Yuri is clear lgbtq+ bias.

I like the casual conflation of ‘normies,’ an ancient internet term denoting people not within the culture, and ‘normal, well-adjusted people.’ They don’t understand what they’re saying when they do this.

    1. Advocacy of, incitement of, or ANY calls to violence.

This only ever applies to leftists or people in the global south. Argue in favor of invading Iran? Support Israel? Support banning abortion? Want to make homelessness a crime? These are all totally neutral opinions that totally don’t involve the use of violence.

Say “It’s really funny Charlie Kirk got clipped after he stated a few gun deaths (resulting from rightwing terrorists shooting up an elementary school) each year is the price of freedom” and it’s “OMG I CAN’T BELIEVE THE HEXBEANIS ADVOCATES VIOLENCE!!!”

Just don’t hard code your personal grievances into your software. How fucking hard can that be? The diehard tankie communists of Lemmy managed to do that. All of those values could’ve been loaded from a config file. But instead he writes “I hate these users in particular” into his git history and gets upset when those users call him out for doing it.

All these fediverse libs exist in the highest form of liberal paternalism.

That’s what it was doing, basically. It was quietly making API calls to retrieve its secret censor list from a server its dev had. It went undetected until someone (db0?) went poking around and mimicked those API calls to get a copy of what exactly it was retrieving.

Nope it was doing both. There were multiple types of block lists in the source code and then there was and additional API call to get even more up to date user block lists. Since the API call was to a block list he personally maintained it’s just hard coding with more steps.

TL;DR: An individual platform owner exercises bourgeois censorship by unilaterally deciding what speech is acceptable while claiming to protect “normies,” revealing how digital feudalism allows private owners to control discourse in the name of community safety.

Care to share a hint of what you’re thinking? Because for the life of me I simply don’t get it. The closest I can get is the appeal of the cowboy-esque roles characters like Kirk and Riker portray, where they get to save the day by winging it, and usually “get the girl” in the process. But there are plenty of other shows where they can get their testosterone-pumping fix in that vein, so why Trek?

Well if you ask me, i’ve heard it be described as “wagon trains to the stars” by someone on the production staff, meaning it has manifest destiny baked into it. There are colonists in every series and sometimes they drive the plot. The Borg are the ever present threat to the federation because of the oft mentioned horror of loosing individuality to a collective and deep space nine’s main character is a war criminal who pursues a separatist on a personal vendetta because he betrayed his uniform (maquis being abandoned to fascist occupation only to be beaten back when they resist by by cardassia and earth but the maquis are still just terrorizdz who chose violence).

Then there’s the audience, there’s a video out there comparing NATO and Soviet weapons which is just that in a title over a video of major kira comparing federation phaser rifles to cardassian phase-disruptors and honestly they’re not wrong. There’s Lazerpig, who made a video essay about the defiant class and it’s connection to the us army. He demonstrated impressive knowledge of the show in the same video that used the phrase “go america” twice. Those sorts of things gain a lot of engagement that a show that is deliberately and consciously socialist probably shouldn’t have.

              “wagon trains to the stars”

It’s long been my understanding that this phrase originated with the need to sell the show to network execs who were only comfortable with westerns due to many years of such shows being among their biggest hits.

The Borg style of losing individuality seems a somewhat reasonable fear to me because the Borg were (almost) truly of a singular mind that completely override the individual & effectively turned them into an expendable robot. There’s a huge difference between that and just having a common goal of the well-being and progress of all community members.

I haven’t watched DS9 since it’s original run & I was too immature at the time to understand all the political undertones and complexities. I’ve wanted to watch it again, but I hate watching stuff alone & my spouse has no interest in something so political. *sigh* Maybe when my kids are more mature someday…

I don’t watch much YouTube or other similar user-generated content, so I’m unfamiliar with that stuff. I’ll have to look for this Laserpig & see what that’s about.

Thanks for expanding on that. At least now I have something new to chew on when trying to understand those types.

Look the framing alone of the “collective” vs “the individual” is something they had full creative control over and they choose to make janeway lecture seven episode after episode about what makes being an individual so exceptionally wonderful. Lazerpig is a NAFO man, and I don’t know how you feel about that but I know how he hates anything that speaks ill of the american empire (which is what it unequivocally is btw) and its capital markets. Replicators (in a freely distributed unprofitable sense) are unconscionable to people like that. So is diplomacy to be quite honest.

The argument isn’t that the Borg are actually good and how dare the authors represent the Borg as bad, it’s that this is a work of art that doesn’t just exist in the framework of its own “lore” but also the real world and real people that it was being published for, and was written by people who had ideologies and opinions relating to the real world, and the Borg were written to convey a reactionary anti-“collectivism” message. The in-universe meaning is inconsequential, the issue is the allegorical element.

Like, do you know Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron”? It’s the one where beautiful people are made to wear masks, the strong are made to wear weights, the intelligent are forced to wear headsets that continuously distract them. TV reporters all deliberately speak with a speech impediment so that they don’t speak more fluidly than someone with a speech impediment, etc.

That’s obviously a bad way to run society and no one is defending that shit except maybe Pol Pot. When I say that I view that story as reactionary, I don’t mean that the story’s society is actually great, but that it’s meant to mock the idea of egalitarianism by treating the above as the logical consequence of it, which is obviously false but you have a century of anticommunist philistines nodding their heads and going “so true”.

the captain seems like he’s unaccountably in charge (they don’t watch voyager) and that’s a power fantasy. Some of them episodes like Let That be Your Last Battlefield or The Outcast are too subtle, others are frozen in time where the trek that existed when they were kids is normal and anything after is woke.

Imo it’s mostly down to material conditions. Star Trek’s heyday was pre-2000. Trek fans are nerd types, many nerd types at the time got high-paying jobs in the tech or engineering sectors. People who are “doing well” generally tend to have petite-bourgeois politics due to a variety of things, but in particular investments and home ownership. See the modern “tech bro” who is usually some type of libertarian.

Further, those sectors often have ties to weapons manufacturers and the like. The people who design missiles at Raytheon are going to be imperialist dogs and a good number of them are going to be trekkies.

When I ran vegan theory club instance I said something he didn’t like and he want ballistic on me calling me out for being anti-American and “extremist” while the country he lives in was preparing to bomb the country where I’m from. He then went on to the fediseer and censured my instance because if he doesn’t like something it is a problem. This is an actual problem with the fediverse, the “call outs” and harassment communities that pick out people for wrong think.

    • “Extremism” only means to oppose the status quo.

These people are actual extremists for liberalism. Any violence they employ is fine because it preserves the status quo, thus fighting the “extremism” of people suggesting that violence with a much smaller scope and scale should be employed to overthrow their hegemony.

Like tankie, the use of the word “extremism” only exists to slander those who dare oppose the status quo in any meaningful way.

  • Does that leave blind spots for mods and admins?

A: No. The filtering is disarmed completely for admins and for mods in their communities.

Well then, now you know why it went by undetected for so long.
