Americans unironically thought that having a 401k means that you own the company.

There’s two different versions of that guy. The first is a turbolib who argues that because anyone can buy shares in a public company, that means we already have communism. The second is a hyper-proto-capitalism traditionalist that think proper capitalism is when every company is owned by a single individual and any group ownership is no different than the USSR.

Why don’t the workers just buy the means of production?

This would be true if only workers within the company owned the stock, and with maybe some exceptions of pensioners, there are no outside investors taking a share of the profit for no labor in return.

Though would it really be a stock market at that point?

That’s more like syndicalism. If the means of production are cut into 100 million pieces and owned by the workers within the disparate companies rather than publicly owned, i.e. owned by everyone collectively, you do not have communism.

It stops being a stock market when you stop being able to buy and sell the stock.

Also it isn’t communism if you can buy and sell the stock.

What if workers could trade or gift away a cut of their profit share to another worker within. Perhaps a senior worker who wants to reward a junior worker? Also this is totally my socialist pipe dream. I don’t know how it would work completely but it’s what I try to imagine as the first step into a post-capitalist mode of production and profit redistribution.

There’s an oldish article from a US Marxist going to a Chinese economics forum and giving a very horrified report back of people literally saying publicly traded corporations are publicly owned.

I think so. He was also a big fan of Lenin’s organizational strategies (if a staunch opponent to communism), even calling his work “What is to be Done?”

Ever had a really shitty bit idea? Joke you want to take way past the point of where it was funny? Want to feel like a stand-up comedy guy who’s been bombing a set for the past 30 minutes straight and at this point is just saying shit to see if people react to it? Really bad pun? A homemade cringe concoction? A cognitohazard that you have birthed into this world and have an urge to spread like chain mail?
