The federal government is hosting a summit in Toronto Friday aimed at bolstering the economy in the face of Canada's rapidly changing relationship with its largest trading partner.
I like to fantasize about all the Canadian chuds turning into anti imperialists once the threat becomes more apparent. Alas, Canada’s culture is too similar to America’s
This is literally true. Historically, settler Canadians have only had three identities: subjects of the queen, Quebecois, and not-American. That’s all they’ve run on to build a nation.
I get really irked at a Canadian friend whenever they talk about America/Americans and act as if it’s so different from Canada. They make it seem like it’s almost as culturally different as say, France from America. I think Canadians perceive the differences from the US much greater than they actually are. Also, (idealism warning) I think they just like to shit on America whenever they can, and annexation takes that away from them
I am Canadian so I have to deal with that all the time, it is quite annoying so I understand how you feel. If you ask a Canadian what it even means to BE Canadian, you’ll always get some weird vague answer that pretty much amounts to nothing (free healthcare, being polite, poutine, maple syrup, being nice, you get the idea). I think they have a chip on their shoulder regarding Americans.
Exactly, and this is likely going to be the biggest barrier to being absorbed into the US. It would undermine very semblance of identity that Canada was cobbled around.
Like when Canadian independence is no longer worth maintaining it will fold, in the end canadian culture is just another regional variation like Minnesota has a different culture than Connecticut.

people were cheering austrias anschluss, welcoming the nazis with flowers, why would this be different?
The funny part here is that Canada doesn’t really have any cultural identity aside from not being the US.
