I’m finally closer to being a transwoman y’all

    Done:

    • programmer socks
    • learned Rust
    • puppy collar
    • actually transitioned (not as important, really)
    • installed arch a bunch of times
    • and, finally, a “real” mechanical keyboard, as of yesterday (ok its a prebuilt but its a hotswap TKL so I think it counts)

    Todo:

    • ancient thinkpad
    • probdbly some other stuff I’m forgetting

Youve installed arch, yes, but transition isnt complete until youve built and installed LFS, or at least a Gentoo stage 1 tarball (if you can even find them anymore). Sorry i dont make the rules shrug-outta-hecks

Is a mechanical keyboard actually worth getting if you’re not a programmer or anything like that? I’m still using my 17 year-old Microsoft Reclusa, which I’m mostly happy with, but I constantly see people saying how amazing they are and it’s made me a bit curious.

i really, really love my rog azoth keyboard. when i was shopping for a new keyboard i #1 wanted dedicated media controls, but so many people reviewing the azoth mentioned what a joy it was to type on… so i got it instead and omg it’s true. so quiet, so smooth. i love it

Hard for me to say unfortunately, as I am a coder and also a gamer so I use my keyboard at least 8 hours a day, basically, so little things like hard trays + low profile chicklet keys, or hard to press rubber dome keys add up over time to hand issues for me.

Its like, if I’m sitting in a chair for 15 minutea generally I dont really care how comfortable it is, but if I’m using it for an hour my butt may fall asleep and I may have back pain.

I think people like mechanicals for a few reasons:

        1. Generally easier to type on for long periods (note that YMMV with this one, some people swear by the chicklet style Apple keyboards or the Logitech MX Keys, but they hurt me)
        2. A pleasant sensory experience (sound and looks here, even if its not loud it can still sound pleasant)
        3. Lots of customisability (lots of people like to get fun keycaps and experiment with different switches)
        4. And well, the joy of building/repairing/modding etc if you’re into that.

But of course the downside is the price.

I haven’t used membrane in forever but I remember how much nicer getting a mech felt, if you do any significant amount of typing/gaming I’d really recommend one. I could never go back and the few times I’ve had to use a membrane I’ve hated it.

If I have some spare money, I might consider getting one then. Apparently there are also more quiet ones now, which is pretty nice, because the loud clicking noises immediately put me off.

Yea there are, you get get quiet ones that have a tactile feel or are smooth. I’m not very knowledgeable on what’s a good buy though, haven’t looked at them since I got mine almost 10 years ago.
