Pokémon Winds and Waves were announced during Friday’s Pokémon Presents stream, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the franchise. As part of the teaser trailer revealing the next generation of games, trainers got their first look at Generation 10’s starter trio: Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua.

Like every generation’s flagship releases, the trio is made up of grass, fire, and water types. Browt is a grass-type bird, Pombon a fire-type dog, and Gecqua a water-type gecko. I want them all, but especially Pombon, the next in a long line of adorable dog Pokémon.

Like Gen 9’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Winds and Waves will feature an open world for trainers to explore. You’ll encounter Pokémon roaming out in the wild across volcanic caves, glistening oceans, and thick jungles. According to the announcement post on the Pokémon news site, “The Pokémon that live in harmony with this region’s lush environment have developed their own unique ecosystems. During this adventure, you’ll team up with all kinds of Pokémon to overcome both the difficult road ahead and even the forces of nature that block your path at times.” The Winds and Waves reveal trailer also showed off a pair of special Pikachu, who look like they’re vacationing tourists.

Pokémon Winds and Waves are expected in 2027 as Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives. In the meantime, you can enjoy the Gen 1 remakes Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, out on Switch today, or catch up on the latest release, Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

gen1 starters: turtle, lizard, frog with plant on its back

I’m the exact age where gen 1 is hyper nostalgic for me but the way people act like the designs were somehow so much better gets to me lol

There’s an experimental quality to gen 1 that people miss I think. It’s not about the designs being “better” it’s more about them being weird little creatures, there was no “pokemon” archetype yet, they were designing creatures for their RPG game, not trying to design “pokemon” if that makes sense.

These days pokemon designs, especially starters, almost feel “focus tested” to be as appealing as possible, it always feels like “animal but with a gimmick” which gen 1 had plenty of, obviously, but they also had weird nonsense and there was an inconsistency in the designs. And even a lot of “animal with gimmick” designs weren’t even that gimmicky, like Ekans is just snake.

I think people who complain endlessly (and make the 3 hour long video essays about why pokemon sucks now) dislike how empty and corporate it feels, pokemon is being treated as a product to sell merchandise, and pokemon designs stem from that philosophy.

A lot of gen 1 designs come from what a bunch of Japanese 20 and 30 somethings though a “monster” should look like, so you get a lot of creatures that feel like they’re played by a guy in a big rubber suit, like they could be fighting ultraman or godzilla. There’s a “clunkyness” to the designs that doesn’t really exist anymore. Everything feels so streamlined and smoothed over now, even mons that have a gen 1 feel don’t feel like they’re trying to capture the idea of a monster from an old cheesy tv show, they feel like they’re trying to emulate what a gen 1 pokemon looks like. Pokemon doesn’t represent anything other than itself anymore, and is just purely self-referential with the designs, and I think people just kind of miss when pokemon designs felt inspired by something other than how many plushie/figurine sales the company expects to see from them. But they don’t realise this or examine it, so they just come away with the idea that the new designs “look bad” without really understanding why they feel that way.

To sum up, the problem is capitalism, but a lot of pokemon “essayists” and whining redditors don’t understand that, or refuse to understand it, and so lash out at the designs, without actually analysing “why” the designs feel different to them these days.

IF Gamefreak wanted they could make legit amazing games. They have the ressources for it. But as it stands Pokemon will keep printing money while gamefreak does the bare minimum.

From what I understand the Pokemon Company wants synergy between the launch of the next gen mainline game and the next trading card game expansion. So when the latter is ready to go, Gamefreak drops the next gen game even if it’s in a beta state.

It’s so stupid tho, does anyone buying pokemon cards even give a shit about them having a new gen of pokemon a few months early? (Hell does anyone buying pokemon cards even like pokemon anymore or is it all speculative stonk bullshit?)

They could easily create content for new pokemon cards from old pokemon, between the old games, the spin off games, the anime and even the pokemon adventure manga they have enough material to create new pokemon cards for 20 years or more without needing a single new pokemon let alone a new generation

It’s like fucking Madden at this point

It’s not just the TCG, it’s also the plushies, the figurines, the gatcha capsules, all the physical merchandise, the Pokemon Company treats the games as an ad for all the other merchandise and doesn’t give a shit if they are shit, only that it makes people want to buy everything else Pokemon other than the games.

Will you choose a Grass type by partnering with Browt, the lively but clumsy Bean Chick Pokémon? Or perhaps you’ll heat things up with a Fire type by picking Pombon, the guileless and friendly Puppy Pokémon. If Water types are more your speed, then the intelligent Water Gecko Pokémon, Gecqua, might be the partner for you.

    Beanis confirmed

Gecqua is the only valid option unless they make them stand up on third evolution.

3D pokemon just doesnt look right I wish it stayed 2d kids dont really care about “advanced” graphics anyway.

100% chance the water one will evolve into that, but there’s always the chance of the fire type turning into a buff Fighting type. Grass one I can see it cause they love their Blazikens

I was thinking the same thing. Just a furball with eyes. Wooloo but also Tangela.

Maybe that little mane will get more lion-y, like those lion dogs with the blue tongues.

Please god no, anything but that

I loved Blaziken in gen 3, seeing them rehash that typing 3 more times was already getting old when they started in gen 4

    I guessed,
Monkey, Lizard, And Creature with a thing growing out of its back.

So shamed to say I didnt see the obvious bird, and also that I was more creative than the multi hundred person company.

Thats literally just a couple animals without fun exaggeration. So am I finally just gonna watch a bird peck out the eyes of another creature and slice it open with its talons? We aren’t doing anything other than realism these days, so why not?
