There’s a basic psychological theory that gets used a lot in safety fields, and I’m sure it applies here.

People suck at predicting how they will feel about something novel. In safety this is most applied as “if you tell someone they will lose an arm, they have no concept how terrible that is, because they’ve never lost an arm. If you tell people the fine is 200 bucks, they know exactly how shitty that makes them feel, so they won’t stick their arm in”. Generally people with… Less flexible… minds have this is far greater degrees.

Im convinced this is similar. They have no concept about going to war random countries or destroying international trust or what it means that tariffs are vaguely increasing the prices they pay.

But they can form a clear imagine of some guy taking building a really ugly shed from their money. They have a great concept of some asshole insulting their friend. Those are basic concepts they can relate too, because they’re a bunch of mentally rigid boomers who couldn’t rotate an apple in their mind without a LLM model to stare at.
