“Fire Rises” is the unhinged modern day i-am-adolf-hitler hoi4 mod too, so we aren’t even dealing with simple paradox brainworms. I assume Gunter picked it out because he is actually IN the mod as a deranged liberal EU conqueror and i guess he latched onto it like the megalomaniacal bloodsucking euro politician that he is. Trying to meme himself into power.

Parents are desperately struggling to limit screen time to save whatever is left of their kids’ attention span while this clown touts this evil nonsense. Bleak times.

oh god, HOI4 is bad for obvious reasons but the minecraft “education” edition is a disaster by itself.

Like it (might) not make little hitlerites, but its a cluster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIfRSh_kX7Q for some of the problems.

    TLDR:

Setting up an actual lesson using it, for the intended audience, is going to be a waste of time. Massive issues with the website being unhelpful (not properly sorting categories, confusing wording, unclear goals or instructions, and no indication they were given a test run).

The implementation in game is all over the place. Some decisions seem well intended (simplify stone into representing an average of Earth’s composition). But others are nonsense (copper was added later, only CERTAIN copper objects yield copper). Very little use of what could be explored in an interesting manner (geological formation for example). As the video says, it isn’t even a problem of minecraft being a fantasy representation. You could show a slice of a minecraft world; point out layers, talk about caves, etc. Then go into how its different then the real world. Ask questions like “Why would you make a game different?”. Talk about game/media design vs real life.

But nope. Its extremely lazy. It screams “slap this together so we can run news stories about it”. Weirdly there ARE some interesting aspects, like glowstone being “made up” of neon and other noble gasses. But who knows if some teacher would know that without sifting through the wiki.

It needs serious overhaulling before putting it before 10 year olds. It wouldn’t even be that hard of an overhaul but there is a 0% chance of it happening. You COULD do some interesting lessons or discussions with games like minecraft. But holy shit I’d be so mad if someone gave me this and I was expected to do minimal work to put it into a lesson. It’d be so easy to devolve into just playing a game or being downright confusing.

On the other hand, eh, better than Oregon Trail.

Fuck off, I loved that shit.

Since age 6 I have had a strong inclination towards backcountry fishing, foraging, and trading. The children yearn for the trails
