Doesn’t matter. A cease and desist can be sent for anything. You either follow it or there’s a risk you are taken to court, and nobody can afford to go to court against Twitter
X’s lawyers cited, among other laws, the Texas Harmful Access by Computer Act and the Lanham Act.
Probably wouldn’t hold up in court, especially when LLM scrapers seem to have free reign… but it’s sadly understandable that the dev got chilled by such a rich bully.
Well this presents a real problem given how many things are exclusively on Twitter and Zuckville and I refuse to have an account for either. Interesting this was the first one killed, not the reddit frontend sites, not the youtube frontends, nor imgur, nor tiktok frontends.
I do propose banning twitter sources from the newsmegas over this. If your source can’t be bothered to be on a better website or publish on substack or something they shouldn’t be able to be in the thread.

Some YouTube frontends like HookTube have been C&D’d in the past, but only ones where the software was using the official YouTube API (and thus Google would have a case that they made an account and then went against TOS). Google has decided in their benevolence to not send intimidation letters to the ones that are scraping data, which follows established rules.
To clarify, last time I checked, Nitter needs you to make accounts to be able to pull data, so that means instance operators did agree to follow the TOS. Since they didn’t follow TOS, their grant to access the website has been revoked. They can either stop (the pragmatic decision when you are spending time and money hosting this for no personal gain) or keep it up and risk court.
I feel old because I remember when all of these websites were open to view without accounts. Suddenly I understand why old people speak so often of “the good old days”.

it’s unfortunate, but consider this: no paywall, minimal tracking by frontend, no 50 thousand gpcr cookie notices as compared to “legitimate” news websites, no sponsoring of entity white washing. now only theory websites remain
