Hey everyone. Hope you all have had a good week. This week I continued my playthrough of Pokemon Omega Ruby. I have no beaten the first five gyms and was flabbergasted when immediately after you get a Latios for free. The kids of 2014 sure were spoiled. I also played a little Balatro on my phone for the first time in a long time, as a rage quit after my closest attempt to getting naneif flamed out the last time I played. I hope you all have had a good week and a good summer, now that Fall is almost here
i tried out project wingman today and its very fun, especially with flight sticks
i love defying gravity and having no blood
I spent the last 2 days preparing a dungeon for a Shadowdark game, the rules are pretty quick to wrap ones head around.
posted in the old thread but heres my updated custom fight stick

i used a drill press on an acrylic sheet for holding the buttons as they fell through the cardboard fairly quickly
Oh hell yeag! Custom fight sticks rule. I saw your previous post about it but forgot to comment, nice to see an update here. I have a 3D printed leverless, it uses a Raspberry Pi Pico with the GP2040-CE firmware and I love this thing. I also have a fight stick from a small company here in Brasil called 2nd Impact and while I like it, it’s also very chonky and levers while fun, are not for me for fighting games, I much prefer the leverless. I’ll snap some photos of my leverless later and post it in a reply here.

My pi pico is gonna be here within the next day or two and I’m going to be completely revamping the build so it’ll work on more systems.
Would you mind sharing your wiring? I’m going with the stick still but I’m a bit new at wiring and would like at least one source of info i can guarantee isn’t an LLM

Nice, I have mine setup up with the PS4 firmware files so it works on Playstation too, but none of the demos/betas I tried there worked for lack of legacy controller support lol.

Sure, I just took some photos of it, but I don’t know if will be useful because my Pi Pico came soldered in a custom board where I just screw in the wires. Made it much easier to assemble, but unfortunately also means I have less access to all the possible buttons.

I really gotta find a way of cleaning 3D prints properly, dust just gathers between the layers like you can see on the first photo.
Oh interesting. I’ve got a practice pcb for soldering as i accidentally developed a new hyperfocus and the plan is to have it be a removable part of a fully custom arcade cabinet. So i can bring the stick to local tournaments but also my kid can use it to play arcade games the rest of the time

Oh nice, I suck at soldering, had to ask a friend to help me out with soldering this leverless. I also forgot to say, but these are actual mechanical buttons. It’s some micro-switches that I forgot the name and brand, but they are pretty good, although a bit loud.

Coolest idea I’ve heard, that’s incredible!! I hope it turns out great comrade! My only tip would be to invest in some good ass buttons, they can make or break the feeling of the controller. I tried making a custom one in a transparent plastic box before I got my 3D printer and not only was it shitty, the buttons where cheap ones and they felt stiff and just plain horrible tbh.
Also I’m not sure the Pi Pico alone with the GP2040-CE firmware is enough to work on tournaments if they are using PS5 at your locals. On PC it will definitely work great, but I think you’ll need to install the Dualshock 4 files in the firmware and the game needs to support legacy controllers. I think using a Brook adapter would solve this issue, but they are expensive last I checked.

They usually are not, however i also have a 4-pin usb-a port and I’m going to try to find the cheapest one of those dongle converters. The gp2040-ce supports the ability to detect and utilize it through that.
The programming part is fine for me because the two languages all these microcontrollers seems to use are C and python, the two languages I half taught myself over the course of my life and i can read an api doc to at least find the things i need to use. Mostly worried I’ll immediately break the physical board somehow with my big sausage fingers.
I have sanwa copies from aliexpress for buttons and a lever for now but when i can manage to get a few full cheques in a row i might be able to spring for some real quality parts. These ones are honespretty good for what i paid though
Oh, also, what size is that jump button all leverless sticks use? Assuming the rest are the usual 30mm or whatever
These are actually pretty small, the Select and Start buttons are around 20mm, the left, down, right, face and shoulder buttons are 23mm, and the big jump button is 29mm (probably was supposed to be 30mm but the print might have came a bit smaller than intended). Since it’s all mechanical switches, the switches themselves are all the same size, just the button caps that are different sizes. Recently the jump button even broke and I had to use superglue to fix it lol.
Oh ok the standard for a lever having one is 30mm but i guess if you need so many more on the face of it you have more room with smaller ones

Oh I see, I saw some hybrid lever/leverless on the internet before.
but i guess if you need so many more on the face of it you have more room with smaller ones
Honestly I think it’s too small, I got big hands so that’s probably why, but mostly it’s the fault of the design I found as I didn’t design it. I think this one was by a user called jfedor if I’m not mistaken, they even got one leverless company harassing them completely out of nowhere because of it, they then made a bunch of other designs, but to use them I would have to order a custom PCB, so this was cheaper to do. Nowadays there’s even chinese leverless like the Haute42 ones that costs practically the same as much as I spend making this.
yay trubbish and kitty
Dying light turns off subtitles every time I close the game

On another note if anyone knows of obscure but fun nes/snes/gba/ds games I am looking for suggestions

Any genre preferences?
I’m down for any genre. My normal go toos are strategy and adjacent games. Stuff like fire emblem, advance wars, golden sun, Pokémon, etc.
I greatly enjoyed Age of Empires on the DS as a kid.
Disclaimer: I was a kid
Hmm I don’t know many strategy rpg type games on those systems, most of the ones I know are PS1 & PSP.
Some DS games off the top of my head:
Front Mission - I’m figuring you’re aware of this one, but jic it’s a mecha strategy rpg and a remake of the first game that was on SNES.
Lock’s Quest - Tower defense (made by the Scribblenauts devs)
Monster Tale - Metroidvania + Pokemon
SaGa 2 & SaGa 3 - remakes of Final Fantasy Legend 2 & 3, only available in English as a fan-translations. SaGa 3 is especially good, it’s a complete rehaul to make it more in-line with other games in the series instead of the black sheep
Ghost Trick - Adventure logic puzzle game (made by the Ace Attorney devs)
[NES] Gimmick, Rockin’ Kats, Conquest of the Crystal Palace, Famicom Wars (there’s a translation), Gemfire, Hammerin Harry, Fire & Ice 2
[SNES] Final Mission, Tactics Ogre, Uncharted Waters, EVO: The Search for Eden, Metal Warriors, Equinox, Shadowrun
[GBA] Rebel Star Tactical Command, Astro Boy: Omega Factor, Drill Dozer, Yggdra Union, Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis, Sigma Star Saga, Summon Night: Swordcraft Story
[DS] The Dark Spire, Yggdra Unison, Hotel Dusk: Room 215, 7th Dragon, Fossil Fighters, Retro Game Challenge, Shiren The Wanderer, Alien’s Infestation, Knights in the Nightmare, The Legend of Starfy

All the cool kids play spectrobes
If you haven’t played Golden Sun 1&2 I thought they were incredible
Yeah they are very good games
I picked up Star Wars: Zero Company. This is my slop, it was made for me!
Haven’t played a lot of it, but excited to dig in. I’m a pretty big fan of the grumpy ass director of operations, Runa.
I finished ReStory and Clair Obscur Expedition 33 recently, too. ReStory was great, E33 fell super flat for me story-wise in the third act (to the point where I just slammed it to easy mode and wrapped it up).
Huh, I had almost the exact same reaction to E33. Once I made it to the final level I just ran past all the enemies I could to end it. Wonder why.
They took a big swing at the end of chapter 2, which I can appreciate, but it just took the story in a direction that disconnected it from what had me interested in it leading up to that part.
It just led me to a denouement where I just didn’t give a fuck about the game lol. You can guess what ending I picked. Didn’t even bother with the extra late game content either.
Quick question: do you need a high-end gaming PC to play Star Wars: Zero Company? Or does it still run alright on older hardware?
I’ve got like RTX 2060, 16gb RAM, and Ryzen 5 5600x running Linux Mint. It seems to run fine so far (I’m on like day 4 or 5ish in-game), but I’m preparing myself for some sketchy performance on busier late game maps.
So I havent looked deeper into it. But afaik some folks complained about performance…which might also be tied to weaker hardware. So if you have like a 1070 or 3050 I wouldnt expect it to run great.
Marvel’s Spider-Man for me. I know I’m late to the party, but this is my first playthrough and this game is FANTASTIC
Late to the party is best for games (especially single player ones).
I only played the Miles game since it was shorter and less likely to trigger my open world fatigue lol.
Yeah Insomniac’s Spider-Man is great. I got the urge to play it again this time on PC mostly because of the Petra Parker art trend.
That’d be a sick ass mod lmao
I think I saw someone post an actual fem spidey mod, but I don’t remember where I saw it.
There’s at least one that converts peter to gwen stacey and uses AI voice modifications
There’s at least one that converts peter to gwen stacey
Cool. The one I saw wasn’t Gwen, looked like a female version of Peter, but I don’t know if it was an actual Petra mod.
AI voice modifications
Ew

I mentioned the voice because the best looking gwen mod i saw on YouTube switched to them rather than just having missing voice lines. :/ (my kid prefers ghost spider so loves watching full playthroughs with no commentary)

I see. I just hate these AI voice mods, there’s a pretty big Skyrim dub mod for brasilian portuguese and it’s just a bunch of shitty AI voices that sound horrible, that shit pisses me off.

Makes sense, Gwen rules. I gotta read her comics sometime.
King’s Field, the original 1994 Playstation game. It rocks, this ponderous 20fps game about killing monstrous venus fly traps and meme skeletons.

If you don’t burn out on the series I’d love to hear your thoughts on all the games 1 through 4. I am utterly obsessed with kingsfield in a way the souls games dont capture for me.
Idk if I’ll play all four in a row, (are they all 50 hour adventures?) but I did put every Fromsoft PS1 and PS2 game on the emulator PC, because they absolutely rock.
What is it about King’s Field that the souls games don’t do for you?

2,3 and 4 average about 20-25 hours per game and you can skip 3 cos it’s kinda not that great although has the petrified statue mechanic that featured in dark souls 2 lawl.
I’m just a sucker for dungeon crawlers I get immersed in them in a way that third person RPGs just don’t do for me, low fov first person dark corridors with low render distance. The first one I ever played was doom RPG on my phone and I was utterly hooked, the genre just tickles a part of my brain I can’t quite explain and kingsfield is the pinnacle to me. Every souls type game from releases moved further and further away from kingsfield and it makes me kinda sad. Doesn’t really explain it but I can’t quite explain why it resonated so hard
I like the souls games myself but also hard agree with you about all of that. Love crawling a good dungeon.
Also maybe KF3 is the best one, who knows?? I shall discover.

Listening to Felix’s extended gamer Chapo slop on the newer From games has got me wanting to dive into King’s Field and the PSX Armored Cores.
Maybe after I finish obsessing over XCOM: Gulp Shit to edition.

Sorry who is Felix
and further what is XCOM Glup Shitto, is that Marvel’s Midnight Suns? But also, totally do it, the Playstation Fromsoft gamss absolutely rule.

Felix from that drug dealer podcast chapo trap house. He’s doing a series of 5 hour episodes on the fromsoft games starting at demon’s souls.
It’s fine if you need that much talking to keep you alive during the workday like i do but it’s boring
People and their dirtbag left podcasts…

Yeah all the materialist podcasts about bagging dirt are so hard to find nowadays
Can I get a link ? I have hobbies/work during which I can listen to stuff so that would be legit appreciated.
It’s on the chapo premium feed so
Glup Shitto XCOM is Star Wars: Zero Company. (Is there a superhero equivalent of Glup Shitto?)
I liked Midnight Suns a lot, though (despite not being a big capes comics person). All the social antics, especially Blade’s book club, made that one stand out for me.
Playstation Fromsoft gamss absolutely rule
I feel like my “rabid PlayStation demo disk collector” childhood friend had one with one of the PSX From games on it, but we quickly moved on to playing Armored Core 2 and Zone of the Enders on PS2 lol.
grabbed star wars zero company out of curiosity, it’s surprisingly good
star wars x-com (newer ones) with an emphasis on the story
feels a bit easier than x-com 2, and the tutorial is looooooooooooooooong, but i’ve been having fun with it

Like Xcom you say? Might have to check it out
New studio formed by former XCOM devs
Reviews say its hella buggy but I’ve been eyeing it because I like X-Com. Sounds more like Midnight Sons in that its got a stronger narrative and is maybe a play once kind of thing. Still suggest it right this second or holding off a month for them to iron some things out?
i have not come across a single noticeable bug so far myself
playing on linux with the pirated version i linked

Heck yeah, I’m a Linux gamer to so I’ll probably grab it today and check it out.
Badly want to play it but fuck EA getting my money, so I’ll wait for some

Oh thanks, i can get it from my old pirate website when I’m ready.
I’m like 10 hours in and damn, they might have made a good star wars game for the first time in like 20 years
Yaoling is one of the best monster-battlers I’ve ever played. I haven’t beaten it yet, just taking a billion-hour detour to experiment with breeding them.
Played a bit of Balatro yesterday, but today I want to mod Elden Ring, make a pretty girl and just bonk bosses in the head. I’m thinking of downloading the Convergence mod.
Like last week I barely played anything, but I guess it’s time I start playing again because I need to distract myself from the dysphoria.
Got into rolling my own EQEmu server with a triple class ruleset, so that mostly. Been fun so far, but it makes me notice that I haven’t really played games in many years.
After rambling about Final Fantasy in a another post I ditched everything to play Final Fantasy, currently working through 7 remake which I am enjoying immensely. I wasn’t expecting it to be completely different to the original unless I’m misremembering but its just from the ground up a different game. I’m interested to see how i do with Rebirth because I loved the original FF7 right up until the “open” world where the game nosedived for me.
Might try to play disco elysium again
This is the release schedule for Path of Exile for the remainder of the year.
Sep 4 - Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5 - this is a rerun of patch 0.5 with no changes, but there is a league economy reset. There are cosmetic rewards for completing achievements in the new league.
Late October - Path of Exile 1 patch 3.30. Path of Exile 1 is continuing to be developed as a separate game from POE2. The devs has confirmed multiple times that patch 3.30 will come out in 2026 and that it will be a large update to POE1. The most logical date for this release would be October 16, 23, or 30. These dates seem logical because it gives a 6-week padding to POE2 releases.
November 7 & 8 - ExileCon 2026. This is a real life convention being held in New Zealand, the location of the developer. This not an annual convention. I think it is the third ever. The other ExileCons were held in 2019 and 2023. This signifies some kind of large announcement.
December 11 - Path of Exile 2 patch 1.0. This will be the end of the POE2 beta. The trailer said that they’re adding the Duelist (strength/dexterity hybrid class) and sword to the game. They still haven’t added the missing Templar, Shadow, or Marauder class. Maybe these will be mentioned at ExileCon.
Had 2 friends come over (one I haven’t seen in years) and played Dragon’s Crown for like 3-4 hours. It’s hard finding 3-4 player games that aren’t, like, competitive fighting/arena/shooter stuff like GoldenEye, Smash Bros., etc.! The presentation is so good. There’s so much detail in the animation and everything looks so amazing. Has cool narration and the combat system(s) are solid. Can see so much influence old-school western RPGs and arcade beat 'em ups and stuff. Need to play more Vanillaware stuff.
It was a tie between that, Affordable Space Adventure on Wii U, and FF Crystal Chronicles: Echoes Of Time. Which I still want to play someday since at least that can be done with just a Wii and 2 wireless DSes over Four Swords Adventures and the first Crystal Chronicles which I think require a GBA each (plus a GBA-GC cable each).
