Most cops are scared and will close their eyes and start shooting as soon as their real fear pushes them in that direction. The rest of the time they cosplay like brave keepers of the peace and like to use their authority to boss you around. Yet, if a homeowner shoots a home invader the cops are the first ones to say it was an over-reaction.

Well, I hate to stick up for a cop, but this is the only cop on scene who actually tried to deal with the shooter. In this picture he is receiving a call, or texts, I can’t remember (turns out it was both), from his wife who is a teacher at the school. Not long after this image he was tackled, and taken into protective custody by the other cops, physically forcing him to stand down. His wife was shot and dying while communicating to him in this picture.

I mean let’s honest here, the other side of the story is that it took a cop that idolizes a vigilante that operates outside the law to actually do anything. Still an indictment of the whole operation.

The idea that “operating outside the law” is inherently something bad is absolutely fucked mentality.

The poor man who steals his bread is “operating outside the law” but is still righteous in his actions.

Stop letting “the law” be your barometer for what is or isn’t right or just. It doesn’t belong anywhere near the discussion.

if you pretend really hard and imagine there’s not governmental corruption, i think that’s where you end up at that mentality. at least that was what i was raised to believe, but we got exposed young to police corruption.

so if the enforcers of the law might be corrupt i thought, maybe the writers are too. so i did what i could to become a writer and get some of that sweet sweet corruption money, as police often have to work on their feet. turns out i was too menial a public servant to pay, dammit.

this is true, but we’re talking about a cop, an agent of the state and the law. in this case he should be held up to that standard

Of course there are. You don’t have to value both sides, nor are they automatically equal or even comparable.

In their own minds though, people who supported slavery weren’t all steepling their fingers and giggling to themselves about how they were going to cause generations of trauma. They had reasons, selfish and brutish as they were, and it’s useful to learn what those are so that we can prevent people from dehumanizing others like that ever again.

Reports from the time show he was in heated argument about going in, and was detained when shooting started and he tried to force himself in.

This isn’t a defense of what happened at Uvalde. I am just pointing out that the meme chose the one guy who physically tried to do something to use as the poster child for their inaction. I am sure if we could use a time machine to see his whole career he did a bunch of terrible shit that ruined people’s lives when her either didn’t have too, or was legally barred from doing so, but got away with it because he is the system’s enforcer.

okay he can have the punisher for a phone background.

          spoiler

I mean its practically a punisher origin story. they are the one “good” cop on the force, and maybe not, maybe not perfectly so. misplaced sensibilities, class identity, etc. build them flawed. then its Uvalde. but this time its not some black or brown kid suffering as a consequence of the system you help prop up. its your wife and child, the actually good person in society, and a doe-eyed innocent child. and the cops around you, they won’t let you save her. they wont let you redeem yourself. they prevent you from being even the pretend hero society projects onto you. The shots are ringing out and you can hear their screams, and the system has you anchored to the ground to protect itself.

the phone screen background isn’t who they are, its who they will become.

Albert Jaragua Corado misses the point of how cops see themselves as Punishers.
Like @jiggle_physics@quokk.au perfectly put it🧵: They see the system “failed” them, they see people above them as betrayers of their sense of justice. They are seeking revenge by punching down. They feel they are owed more than a loyal partner and kids. They feel civilians deserve to obey laws, otherwise they are as good as dead. If law becomes the cudgel, then the punishing should never cease.

Being a “coward” is praxis for them, for they are punishers, not the heros.

Yes, they are aware they are villains, and they enjoy every second of it.

He is saying they need to be good guys in service to the public, rather then seeing themselves as punishers of a public they now regard as criminal. He suggests switching their idol to Captain America because he is all about self sacrifice for the common good of the citizenry. That by aligning with him, as police, they are bad.

It has been a long time since I have read comics, but he was basically an anti-hero. He did a lot of stuff that was straight just bad, torturing people for information, and just a lot of over the top use of force. He doesn’t see himself as a hero, and he regrets getting into the life hie is in, because it’s just a lot of killing, and not always killing “bad guys”, plus it leads to people he cares about always being collateral damage.

He was a marine, whose exact story shifted, but was basically some sort of black ops, or some sort of special operations, sometimes he’s a seal. But his family coincidentally witness a mob hit and they get killed over it. Frank returns and goes into a period of depression and alcoholism, then decides to kill the mafia organization that did it. This just lead him into a never ending path of revenge, turning to people seeking revenge on him, turning to him killing them, and so on.

I still find the character pretty problematic, but it was very cathartic to see him tear through (verbally and physically) the corrupt cops trying to co-opt him for their own evil shit.

I literally had a cop pull me over for going a little fast on the road out of a shitty little town. He ended up giving a warning, but he was getting text messages on his phone and the notification time was the Stallone judge dredd “I am the law!” Sound clip. Was that the guy that was always cowering behind the corner? The only time he would look out was when the other guy would glance out, and then he’d hide behind him his hand on the lead guy’s shoulder. Then he’d dart back to his behind the corner. All the while the killer was murdering little kids. They were all cowardly, but this guy was really on the edge of true panic.

Then there was the Parkland cop, who hid outside the school, listening to the killer murder one student after another, and when other cops showed up, he told them to stay outside, with him.

No, this was the one cop there that tried to do something. Very shortly after this picture he was physically restrained, and removed, and put into protective custody by the other cops. He is looking at his phone because his wife is communicating with him as she is shot, and dying, in the classroom she taught in.
