If the guy converted to Islam suddenly without consulting people close to him then I can’t imagine he’s that serious about it. I give him three months. Guys do this sometimes, they suddenly decide they’re a different, cooler guy now and they make a big debut as Guy 2.0. But normally it’s more like they suddenly buy a Miata or start wearing a leather jacket.

Is there a name for this phenomenon? When dudes very suddenly become very surface level devoted to something they never showed interest in before and try to be the most 100% of that thing. Like I’ve known guys who suddenly decided they were really into the Roman Empire, and one guy who out of nowhere became a dragon otherkin and every conversation with him for six months was about the politics of dragon councils and which people he suspected of secretly being wyverns.

this dude sounds like he completely bought into being a dragon otherkin so the fact you labled it ‘surface level’ is very funny to me I’m just imagining him yapping at you for like 45 minutes about some dragon council meeting like jerma-happy and you sitting there thinking “yeah sure, ok you fucking larper”

Calling him the dragon equivalent of a revisionist liberal

Also this is gonna sound completely fake but he dropped the dragon stuff after he got arrested because he brought a sword into a Starbucks and tried claiming religious discrimination because the sword contained the souls of his various dragon ancestors.

Sounds like the way people with ADD tend to pick things up, get really into them for a short period of time and then put them down. Or kids when they are searching for their “thing”, maybe the guys you know are just big kids who still never found their thing. Or maybe its just more noticeable than the people who pick up something new, get really into it, and do stick with it forever, which is also something that happens. I know guys who got super into grilling or woodworking or whatever and are still at it after many years.

I try to give people some grace when they suddenly get into a hobby really hard, because how else are you gonna find out if you like something and have a long term hobby if you never try it yourself first? It also helps that most people I’m friends with are some flavor of AuDHD, so a lot of conversations start with “so what are you hyperfixating on rn?”

Surely there would be a number of different motivations and it can be difficult to tell when an interest in something is genuinely “surface-level” unless you have that interest yourself, so I don’t know if I’d label this as a single broad phenomenon. I also don’t know whether I’d label “suddenly getting into something new” as a guy thing as opposed to just something that I guess stands out more when guys do it. Heck, who knows if it’s even something they “never showed interest in before” versus just something you never noticed them taking interest in before, or they just didn’t tell you in particular, or they did tell you and you just forgot? I’m thinking about all the times when people are like “you never showed signs of being trans”, but actually you showed plenty, it’s just that the possibility of being trans is so far outside of the cis brain that even the eggiest of behavior goes right over their heads. It can be the same for interests/hobbies, especially if people are worried about being judged as cringe for it.

Not to ascribe motivations to people I don’t know, but if I heard about somebody in my life suddenly converting from atheism to Islam without consulting anybody in their life about it first, then I’d have to wonder if the person was experiencing psychosis. This isn’t to say that people can’t genuinely convert from atheism to a religion, but when that conversion is particularly sudden and accompanied by erratic and irresponsible behavior such as converting without telling your partner of ten years, then the total change of worldview to start believing in supernatural forces becomes a bit concerning. For people who take a sudden interest in the Roman Empire, my first thought would be that it’s a cryptofascist red flag, that the interest is surface-level because it’s more of an aesthetic-based dogwhistle than anything, and actual scholarly knowledge of the Roman Empire would be counterproductive to the fascist worldview. Which isn’t to say that it’s impossible to take an interest in the Roman Empire in a non-fashy way, just that I’d approach with much caution. As for otherkin, then that’s a subculture that skews very autistic, and I would know a thing or two about letting my life suddenly get consumed by a new autistic interest.

All of this based on people I’ve known who converted to Islam, got into the Roman Empire, or were otherkin, although a few anecdotal experiences aren’t enough to speak for people as a whole. As I’m saying, there are many different motivations behind why people might suddenly change so much, so we should try to be less judgmental on the whole. Even in the cases where it genuinely is just somebody deciding to become a Different Cooler Guy for the sake of being a Different Cooler Guy, then should we really be judging people for finding ways to experiment with their identity? Maybe you’ll feel some second-hand embarrassment from seeing somebody’s seventieth Guy 2.0 debut, but the state of being alive in general is a phase, so why should we devalue the sub-phases that life contains? The problem with suddenly deciding to wear a leather jacket is the leather part, not the change in wardrobe. To be cringe is to be free!

      I dunno.

Oh I’ve done it before and yeha I was being glib. I’m cringe too and have also gone through phases. My anecdotal experience though is that I kinda had myself figured out at 13, when I thought my gender and sexuality were different than everyone else and also I really like hardcore punk music/fashion, and that I wanna be vegan.

Then I spent a long time trying to stop being those things because I thought they were just cringe things from my youth that I needed to grow past. So I adopted a bunch of fake surface identities and tried to compensate for their fakeness by overdoing it. Now I’m well into middle age and I’m very confidently a nonbinary asexual vegan who dresses in chains and black eyeliner and I’ve never been more chill with myself. My original read on myself at 13 was correct and the actual immature thing I was doing was trying to be someone else.

I know that’s not everyone’s experience, but that’s been the experience of a lot of people I’ve known who go through the cycles of adopting personas suddenly. I guess what I’m not judging is changing interests, or having a niche identity, or even when it’s done by guys. But I do kinda get wary of people who very suddenly shift themselves in a way they think will be interesting, when really they’re just adopting a persona for the sake of it. I’ve also known people who converted to religions out of nowhere and then didn’t actually do stuff like read the Torah/Bible/Quran but would try to speak authoritatively on religious matters as if they were an insider. I don’t like that kinda thing, when people try to confidently claim something that’s actually very superficial and they just started last week.

Stuff like coming out as trans though I’d consider different, because that’s still often not a safe thing to do. Like I came out as asexual to family and even that didn’t go well, even though being asexual doesn’t have nearly the same level of persecution or threat as other identities. So something like that is usually gonna have to be sudden because you gotta find a safe moment, safe person to come out to.

i kind of agree but i also don’t think this necessarily means it’s an entirely superficial thing. taking the example of being trans it’s not at all uncommon for trans people who’ve recently come out to speak about things in a way that makes it clear they have only a superficial understanding of them. that’s not because their transness isn’t deeply rooted or anything, they just don’t have the experience of having lived in that long enough to have gained a better understanding

Very good comment, thank you. I figured there was some context I was missing. I have to wonder if people might be referring to different things when they talk about having figured themselves out, because either my own case is very similar to yours (“hmm I sure spend a lot of time thinking about being a girl and kissing boys… oh well, I’m sure that’s not significant! just teenage hormones or something! let’s not give into those fantasies under any circumstances!” i-love-not-thinking) or it’s completely dissimilar, because I wouldn’t say I have myself figured out even now that I’m in my mid-20s.

Midlife crisis. Thor guy is a little young for it, but the partner is 36. It’s right about then that people start to seek more out of life than the hamster wheel. It does involve a lot of sports cars and wardrobe overhauls, but religion/spirituality can enter the mix.

Yeah but from the partner’s understanding, it was an interest in the religion as like an academic subject, not a personal religious belief. I don’t know the full story here but it seems like there was either a failure in communication, or her partner was being dishonest with her. Either way, she didn’t understand her partner wanted to be a Muslim until the moment it happened, which would be very odd and upsetting.

The post format on these subs are so tuned to reddit karma farming meta that it feels like they were made solely for that purpose. The vague mildly ominous post title to clickbait people in, the classic rant text post about someone/something in the person’s life that made AITA so popular, and my last favorite new meta the random picture attached to a text post because the reddit redesign favors images over text.

I suppose that’s fair. Idk, perhaps I’m just naive or too trusting. Or at least the vote scores around these comments say that my opinion is far and away not the popular opinion on the matter. Like, I don’t see a reason to immediately concern myself with such things. When someone’s thoughts and opinions start shifting, then I’d start taking action, but until then, I don’t really care what religion my wife practices (which is none, and probably will be none forever).

I’d absolutely break up with someone who converted to any of the abrahamic religions in adulthood. There’s a reason the holy texts of those religions are used to justify some of the worst things humanity is capable of, and it’s because the god of the abrahamic religions is depicted as explicitly approving of most of them. I’m not out on the streets haranguing anyone but I am also not okay with being in a relationship with someone who decides, as an adult, that that entity is worthy of worship.

      “Obnoxious atheist”. gulag

You know what results from obnoxious atheists? Some people feel uncomfortable, mainly online. Many but not all of them horrible people who wish to push their own religion on others and resent anyone doing verbally to them what they do without thinking as a right “because they care about you not going to hell” to people every day of their lives. No mass violence. No honor murders. No community gatherings trying to bully the person back to non-belief. No organized shunning. No getting fired from their job. No being denounced as evil from the pulpit in front of the community to stir up hate against them. You know what normal religious structures and their people have done for centuries? Wars, honor killings, mass murder, centuries of brutal oppression of women, LGBTQ+ folks and so on. All in their name.

I mean let me reference Mao’s no right to speak here. These people demand insulation from being challenged, from having what they say challenged and from being forced to study their beliefs and assertions critically rather than parroting what’s said from the pulpit and worshiping their book. They demand atheists be silent as they demand women be silent because they have an order they like and any disruption to that causes them pain in the form of having to tolerate dissent, non-believers, and uncomfortable questions. And you’re perpetuating it by using phrases like this.

Are there reactionary atheists who are scum who should be <redacted>? Absolutely. Is it because they’re an atheist? No. It’s because they’re reactionary scum. Yet just as any uppity woman who stands up for herself is branded a b*tch and other things to keep women silent there is an effort to brand any uppity atheist who speaks too stridently as “obnoxious”. I’m sure actually obnoxious atheists exist, perhaps they are streamers who go to a church or mosque and attempt to bait the believers there as they exit their service but you know what? Religious people have those too. They go to conventions, college campuses, etc and record and bait people with incendiary things so it’s not really an atheist monopoly or trait and you’re perpetuating a slander the religious use to silence non-believers.

Why does this stereotype and slur exist only towards atheists when “obnoxious” religious people stand outside anime conventions telling women especially that they’re going to burn in hell and so on? When “obnoxious” religious people stand outside reproductive health clinics screaming at women and trying to dox them for exercising choice? One is a group of people reacting to oppression, sometimes perhaps with the wrong targets true, the other is the group that has historically oppressed people and imposed itself upon the society and all within it to obey.

How many atheists have killed their partners for converting to religion? Maybe not zero but then ask how many religious people, monotheists, Abrahamic types especially have killed their partners, children, neighbors for becoming an atheist? So many we could scarcely count. This isn’t distant history. How many gay or trans kids have been kicked out because of a religion? vs how many kids have been kicked out by atheist parents for adopting a religion?

Equating these as equally bad is willfully spreading lies and using the phrase “obnoxious atheist” here is doing just that.

You know that “isn’t there someone you didn’t ask?” meme with Jesus? Well that’s the truth of it. With a deeply religious person you’re not just in a relationship with them but their deity and their earthly representatives (the ones they listen to anyway). So it’s no longer “let me think about it”, it’s “hmm let me think and consult my religious texts and maybe my religious leader”.

“I desire there to be less trifling with the label ‘atheism’ (which reminds one of children, assuring everyone who is ready to listen to them that they are not afraid of the bogeyman), and that instead the content of philosophy should be brought to the people.” Karl Marx

The problem with the average modern atheist isn’t the atheism or the deconstruction of religion that many of them (poorly) attempt to engage in, the issue is the utter lack of a social vison behind that deconstruction, it’s the rampant individualism, the misanthropic moralism and the narcissism that ironically ends up mirroring the mentally ingrained habits of the religious

People who impart atheism with an identarian flavor simply suck at politics, which makes them useless in actually combating one of the primary capitalist sock puppets called theocracy

Capital A atheists are constantly handed a cultural mandate on a silver platter and they always squander it

This is more or less the kind of person I was referring to. People harassing others just for being religious doesn’t come across as an act worthy of the effort imparted to it. And just because I remarked that this kind of person exists doesn’t mean that I have implied that obnoxious religious folks don’t exist. Obnoxious religious folks are a fucking nuisance. I am rather not fond of either sort of individual. So you’re really preaching to the choir here.

I have a very powerful dislike for abrahamic religions for the reasons you mentioned and being that. I do not immediately prejudice an individual for being a part of said religions though. That’s disingenuous in my eyes as the abrahamic faiths have a wide set of interpretations ranging from the spread of death and destruction to non-believers to simply mutual aid amongst one’s community.

Honestly not sure why you put up this wall of text to create an argument. You made a whole host of assumptions about my beliefs and character by my use of two words.
