The start of a Bluesky thread - https://bsky.app/profile/ianboudreau.com/post/3mylhkmsxrc2n

The auto influencers have explained that this carbon fiber-wrapped ball, which sits right behind the driver’s head, holds about 100kg of nitrogen pressurized to about 10,000 psi. Let me just go review the tolerances people found in their Cyber Trucks. […] You have another 40 liter air tank where the passenger seat would normally be.

Wait, the thruster thing wasn’t just for the show and they are actually planning on selling it?? Absolute ketamine brainrot

If this car ever releases (dubious) it will be missing about 80% of the features claimed.

He’s going to demand $200,000 for an electric Miata with an interior made of Styrofoam, and Americans are gonna seal clap over it because it will be the only small EV in the US market.

      an electric Miata

That would be popular but too many Americans are addicted to L A R G E. It’s insane how big American cars are. I’m watching Star Trek: Voyager and they had a flashback episode. For a while - some of the crew drove around in a ~1997 truck. Even 30 years ago trucks were large and more cab than bed. Now they look like a car version of dinosaurs.

it will be the only small EV in the US market.

Elon’s StyroRider might actually be it.

I think it must be said that as a whole the preference for large was created by marketing and the CIA and doesn’t really represent any meaninful part of the American soul. Needing a battle barge to feel safe from capitlaist alienation is such but not really a preference if you take my meaning

This is a carbon over wrapped pressure vessel, a common part in rocketry. It’s a metal pressure vessel with carbon fiber wrapped around the outside, they’re very good for exactly this task.

Maybe, but the primary purpose is to enhance the strength of the inner metal portion. The polymers used are very strong in tension so they protect against expansion. Compression is a different story (see Titan lol).

Main advantage is being lighter for a vessel of the same capacity and rating made of only metal.

In all fairness that did hold up under compression, and if it had only been used a single time it would have been fine. It’s just every time it cycled through compression and decompression it accumulated more and more damage and got weaker and weaker, and they didn’t do any sort of maintenance or inspections on it because that costs money. They effectively built a single use deep sea submersible cheaper than a reusable one, but then reused it until it inevitably failed in an object example of why carbon fiber is a dogshit material for a deep sea sub even if its numbers are fine under the most ideal circumstances.

Although come to think of it they probably didn’t build proper safety tolerances into those ideal circumstances calculations either, because that would have made it more expensive again.

corrosion happens to the metal on the inside (and not from nitrogen), so no. rather metal shell slightly expands when it’s filled, and carbon fiber prevents further expansion when metal will tear, so you can make the metal part significantly thinner, and thus lighter, similar thingy is used for co2 vessels for paintball/small carbonation appliances (although co2 is at 60 atmospheres), it’s rather cute solution.

the baby version of this is a plastic bottle wrapped in duct tape, it can go to like 10-20 atmospheres, rather than 8-10 (useful for water bottle rockets)

Sure sure. Apparently liquid nitrogen has an expansion ratio of seven to one. Every liter of liquid produces 700 liters of gas, or nearly 25 cubic feet. That’s a LOT.

Tesla can’t get body panels to line up. This cum stain isn’t putting 85,000-ish liters of gas into a pressure vessel at supercritical pressures. Anyone who thinks he is is smoking crack.

Probably grabbed some people from SpaceX, maybe a competent-enough engineer who saw it as an easy payday and easier/less soul-crushing work than the “actively burnout fresh aerospace engineering grads” machine at SpaceX and who was still enough of a grifter chud to ingratiate his way into the job.

I’d assume the control software came out of there too, probably from some small compressed air VTOL balancing test rig or the like.

The engineering behind the stunt is admittedly pretty cool, right? The fan car stuff, all that downforce. But what happened is they shitcanned an actual roadster they’d been working on for nine years in favor of what is essentially a Top Gear bit

    yea

No no! It’s amazing! Every billionaire should have one! :janet-wink:

    no thoughts just vibes

Carbon fiber totally worked with submarines! :pog-dolphin:

EDIT: This is begging to be repurposed as a supervillain flying missile. Imagine a monologue ending with a cheesy one-liner from the villain like “You seem strong! Let me Tesla your skills!” before clicking a button and all the Teslas rise up to intercept the hero like heat seeking missiles.
