Where’s Greenland?
in the north atlantic, but that’s not important right now
it’s an entirely different territory, altogether.
Either dementia or Trump is getting weak and loosing ambition.
Too soon
Inb4 he names it the Straight of Liberty.
Trump Strait
Strait of America
Epstein Strait
No Canada and Mexico ?
Weak
I know for a fact that if Trump did indeed add, however miniscule, new oficial territory to the united staes, let alone Greenland, he would be seen by 70% of americans as the best president of their lifetimes
he could easily do this by getting some tiny island off Canada as an excuse for backing down off his dumbass trade war. try to tell me the syrupheads wouldn’t roll over and give him Grand Manan
Damn, he must’ve had a pretty rough meeting or something, probably talking about how their oil reserves are running out and they’re basically fucked. I don’t think I’ve really seen him crash out quite this much before.
probably talking about how their oil reserves are running out
That makes me wonder if one day soon Trump is literally in motion (to his plane or his helicopter, etc) and he makes a passing remark to the pilot fish journos who follow him around. In a weirdly flat monotone he says “We’re gonna take Greenland. It’ll be Trumpland.” And the reporters start yelling questions but Trump has turned away and is walking toward his vehicle. Nearly all of the MSM treats it like a joke but within an hour news breaks that the US has invaded Greenland after all.
how can you tell if an invasion has started when US troops are already stationed on Greenland bases
do they need to declare invasion like Michael declares bankruptcy in The Office
there’s some euro troops there to attack. they could also massacre the indigenous people for no reason.
Classic American pastime :yea:
how can you tell if an invasion has started when US troops are already stationed on Greenland bases
Trump really likes the bing-bang-boom. To make a fiery reality tv-like explosion - he could tell them to drop a big bomb on something like fuel tanks. I bet he would prefer a projectile from a big gun on a warship but all his ships are kind of busy now. But a plane would do. They could use a MOAB for no apparent reason. During Trump 1.0 - a MOAB was dropped on Afghanistan and I don’t think the reason was ever actually explained.
Ninja edit. I googled. Oh, it killed dozens. MOAB strike: US bombing of IS in Afghanistan ‘killed dozens’
D.C. isn’t even legally a territory dumbass
neither is Federated States of Micronesia
Okay Donny, go there and make a speech. I dare you!
It’s bizarre to me that you can orient the western world around never forgetting how WW2 came to pass and just do the same shit again. Like Archduke Ferdinand was the linch pin keeping the whole show together and we’ve all collectively never gotten over it
somebody more clever than me could make a sad joke about pan-slavism and balkanization
Can’t believe the US has gone Woke Island
I didn’t know that about Micronesia. Apparently it’s the same protectorate status as palau, which isn’t listed for some reason?
I love the flag that includes a bunch of other territory which I can only assume he’s claiming too, a bit like the Cypriot flag 🇨🇾
Aren’t the last two generally considered independent countries?
It’s complicated but he’s not exactly wrong. They’re Protectorates. I’m not aware of all the details, but from my understanding they were granted “independence” with a bunch of caveats and stipulations and a lack of true sovereignty. It’s why we do a lot of our nuclear weapons testing in those countries.
There’s no perfect analogue, I think, but Greenland’s relationship with Denmark is close.
He is technically wrong, and they are technically not protectorates anymore because they do not recognize US as their suzerain (since different times in 1970s-1990s). They are sovereign nations entered in a “Compact of Free Association” with the US which promises them military protection, social services and disaster relief in exchange for participation in US military programs but that doesn’t strip them of sovereignty. The relationship is closer than that with Canada or many NATO countries but it’s similar in many ways. If he went so far as to say those sovereign countries are US territories he should’ve included Canada on the list too (would have been funnier as well)
Only among intelligent people.
man when we get a socialist US (which we will btw, we’ll win), it’ll be pretty sick to use independence of island territories to help establish a Polynesian Confederation and a Caribbean Confederation with full decolonization and control of their territories under indigenous and socialist governments
Any truly socialist US would have to balkanize and preferrably give back self determination to the overwhelmingly latino population in the territory they stole from Mexico
this is also a response to @balsoft@lemmy.ml below you
Yeah there’s much decolonization to do, though I think ‘balkanization’ isn’t quite right. There’s going to be a massive redistribution of land to indigenous nations, but that’s not the same as just breaking apart the US. Not every single inch is going to be returned to native nations because the population imbalance and distribution simply doesn’t allow it. If you start by actually honoring all the existing treaties with native nations, then you end up with probably 15-20% of land area immediately returned in what’s the largest land back program by many orders of magnitude, and would mostly be pretty straightforward outside of dense urban areas because the US is actually pretty sparsely populated. Look at Cherokee lands, for example, which I’ve roughly outlined here excluding the major urban areas now on the fringes:

This is more less traditional Cherokee land pre-Indian Removal Act. You have to deal with the existing material realities and exclude the major urban areas that surround this (especially given the significance of Atlanta to future Black land sovereignty). You do some sort of carve out around the siginificant urban areas within this of Asheville and Knoxville. According to the lying machine, about a quarter of that outlined land is state or federal parkland, military land, or wildlife management areas. That’s roughly 8-9 million acres. The current Cherokee population is about half a million, mostly in Oklahama (all of those lands they would obviously retain, as well). If you return all that public land and go further to create contiguity between them to avoid a messy patchwork, the Cherokee nation, currently at about half a million members, would easily have enough land to rebuild thriving and complex communities combining traditional and modern lifeways with full sovereignty and no need to rely on external support after a period of reparations to offset deprivation and enable development. This is absolutely the biggest and most complex land back process to complete, but it’s extremely doable with political will and a change of governmental mindset.
Go down the line of native nations with enrolled members today. For those west of the Mississippi, restoring huge portions of their traditional land is trivially easy because almost western land is undeveloped and federal. The Navajo, at about a quarter million people, would anchor a Four Corners network of native nations that would include the Utes, Dine, Pueblo, O’odham, Pima, Yaqui, etc. Plains nations in the Upper Midwest would be easily returned because of low population density and the general need to wage war on ranchers as part of the socialist construction process. The Ojibwe could be restored sovereignty over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, also largely underdeveloped, without much trouble. There’s absolute a plausible path involving very little population transfer to granting large, contiguous, traditional, and culturally and economically useful land to the existing indigenous nations of the US sufficient to support themselves independently that would actually disturb the settler-descended working class very little and largely only challenge bourgeois landowners and the military, who both need to go down anyways.
The rest of the US has no real need to be ‘balkanized’. Unless you just operate from the assumption that it’s automatically illegitimate because of some metaphysical Amerikkkanness, it would be in everyone’s interest but the bougies for the continental US to remain largely unified under a socialist government.
IMO it will also need to give back a lot more land and self-determination to the native american population in the territory they stole from native americans (so all the territory)
