Møkkakaffe

Møkkakaffe (lit. Crappy Coffee) is a 2013 LGBT drama miniseries with dialog in Norwegian and Norwegian Sign Language. It is according to NRK the first (fictional) Norwegian TV series to have Deaf producers, a Deaf writer, a Deaf director, and several Deaf actors. It was produced by Døves Media for NRK. Døves Media also made the previous NorSL goodies I’ve shown, including Salt & Pepper (2024), Lars (2022), Dette er norsk tegnspråk (2023), and Tegnsatt (1989).

To summarize the plot of Møkkakaffe:

The hearing Bakke family and the all-Deaf Oppedal Strand family meet each other in a hospital waiting room after Jan-Henrik Strand, the husband/father of the Oppedal Strands, crashes his car; with Ulrik Bakke, the son of the Bakkes, riding shotgun. Jan-Henrik Strand and Ulrik Bakke both fall into a coma after the crash, leaving their family members wondering why the two of them were driving together to begin with — how do those two guys know each other?! Are they keeping secrets from their families?! Slowly but surely, cracks begin to show in the marriages of both families, secrets are revealed, and new relationships both platonic and romantic start to bloom, as the hearing family learns to sign and appreciate Deaf culture; and all things, eventually, are set right.

I have already seen this show, so I can personally recommend it.

You can probably guess from the post title and the previous description that Jan-Henrik and Ulrik’s secret involves them being gay for each other. Also, this show has the most 2013 depiction of a Western anime weeaboo I have ever seen, it’s glorious. This is also the only show I’ve ever seen where pregnancy fetish porn plays a major role in the plot.
