When Aer and I decided not to continue showing PONIES: the Anthology after number 7, I found myself with a few holes in my schedule to fill. And so I landed on the idea of doing a short break from the usual Saturday content for an “honorary Wednesday” today.
What’s the chef cookin’ tonight?

Nuummioq
Nuummioq or The Man From Nuuk is a 2009 Greenlandic drama film initially directed by Otto Rosing, later directed by Torben Bech as Rosing’s depression left him unable to finish the movie. It is the first feature film produced entirely in Greenland[1], and it is also apparently the first Greenlandic movie to be shown in international film festivals. Its moody atmosphere has been compared to films of Ingmar Bergman, according to Danish Wikipedia. Producer Mikisoq Lynge stated in an interview that Nuummioq attempts to paint a more nuanced picture of Greenland than the movies about the country before it, which (according to Lynge) either romanticized the country as just being a bunch of noble hunters in kayaks surrounded by wide open nature, or portrayed Greenland as a country of lecherous drunkards or murderers and arsonists.
Plot description from English Wikipedia:
Malik, a 35-year-old construction worker from Nuuk discovers the love of his life at the time when he is diagnosed with cancer. He faces the choice of staying in Greenland with Nivi, the woman he has come to love − or leaving for Denmark in search of medical treatment.

What is fanime?
A fanime (etym. blend of fan + anime) is basically when someone makes an anime-style cartoon show by drawing frames in MS Paint; compositing them in Windows Movie Maker with pirated music, stock sound effects, and dialog recorded in one take on potato microphones; and posting the result to YouTube. This isn’t necessarily accurate of all fanime, but the throughline is in any case that fanime is a form of democratized amateur animation combining anime aesthetics with “Internet Ugly”. The style is most associated with the Western anime fandom of the mid-2000s through mid-2010s, where it was often difficult to distinguish sincere fanime shows from parodies of the genre.
Weeb’s Guide to School
Weeb’s Guide to School is a 2018-2019 magical girl slice-of-life comedy fanime by SaltyArtsyBro. Marred by production issues, it ended up cancelled after three episodes, but what was made still looks like a good time. Plot description from Fanime Realm with a few typos corrected:
This series is about six students of Akoni Acadamy. Lavender and Kassidee have moved from Kobe to Aomori. There are shenanigans with Cole and Danny, with the latter receiving a job. Topaz has plans to welcome the new students while Akii is along for the ride.

Fanime weekend?? :matt:
Otto Rosing has actually been in the Danish news recently, for his work on “Grønlands hvide guld” with Claus Pilehave. The documentary concerns the Danish economic exploitation of Greenland, but it made some basic errors (The biggest being confusing income and profit) and during promotion things got a little embarrassing (Bragging about winning a fake award, paying for coverage, cooperating with a specific Greenlandic political party during an election) which got the film pulled from distribution and allowed people to pretend the concern of economic exploitation of Greenland is fake.
The whole thing was thoroughly depressing, because Danish media just ran with it and pretended Greenland is one big parasite as a result, and open racism against Inuit became (more) normal on TV and in radio.
Anyway I’ve been wanting to see Nuummioq, so I’ll probably check it out with you guys.
Edit: There was never an error, you saw nothing.
Thank you for this very good bit of extra context. Are there any specific examples of anti-Inuit racism you’ve been seeing/hearing on TV and radio that you’d like to highlight? I’m pretty disconnected from the metropolitan Danish media landscape, although I do watch/listen to Greenland’s own public broadcaster KNR sometimes.
PS: Pedantry
…Also, not that terminology is a major point, but I might as well point out — if for no other reason than that it’s a personal pet peeve of mine — that inuk in Greenlandic (and Canadian English) only ever refers to one person, so unless all the racism in Denmark has been against exactly one Greenlander and Danes have been just peachy with the remaining fifty-six-thousand-ish, I can only assume that you really meant to say plural inuit. People using inuk as a plural is just one of those things that makes me momentarily go prescriptivist just because it bothers me, like people saying “thusly”, I can’t stand that. No, I am not fun at parties!
Ooof there’s a bunch. Concerning the movie directly you got a lot of casual stereotyping and remarks about how their victim mentality is clouding their ability to do basic maths and how actually Greenland is dependent on us and should be grateful (That’s the big one. Genuinely this was huge. Just on and on with how Inuit are stuck being angry at Danes to such a degree that they can think of nothing else, then calling them parasites). It gets hard to boil it down to specifics because it is such naked racism and it is so casual. The most remarkable one I know of was probably RadioIIII having a recurring segment on a “satire” news show on the film mocking it, running for actual weeks.
But I also heard people on the national broadcaster just fully resorting to full blown racist caricature when discussing it, often weirdly directed at Claus Pilehave, Otto Rosing and Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam (WHO ARE NOT INUIT. THEY ARE ALL DANES). Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam is especially a target for ridicule, becoming some sort of SJW strawman to some.
The thing is, this combined with the Trump-Greenland affair has for some reason to their mind given Danes permission to be very casually cruel to the Greenlandic population, and weirdly enough the diaspora too. It isn’t just when discussing this specific thing, but since then it has just become permissible to openly speak of Greenland as entitled.correction
You are one hundred person correct on this one, I even corrected myself from Inuit because of some brain fart.
15 minutes to Nuummioq and Weeb’s Guide to School! Void your bladders and grab your snacks.
