What’s the chef cookin’ tonight?

The Boondocks is a 2005-2014 animated sitcom created by Aaron McGruder for Adult Swim, based on his comic strip of the same name. The series is centered on the Freemans, a Black family of two young brothers (Huey and Riley) and their granddad Robert, and follows their let’s say “escapades and misadventures” in white suburbia. The Boondocks is known for its anime-influenced style — particularly borrowing from works like Samurai Champloo — as well as its irreverent satire of Seppolandic politics. It is considered one of the greatest Black cartoons of all time, if not the very greatest, coming about in a perfect storm that allowed for such a radical show to be created.

Tonight we’ll be watching these six episodes:

  • “A Huey Freeman Christmas” — Huey is given full control over his school’s Christmas play.
  • “The Real” — Robert pretends to be blind to get on Pimp My Ride and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
  • “Return of the King” — MLK wakes up from a coma, only to be ostracized for being too peaceful for post-9/11 Seppoland.
  • “The Itis” — Robert opens a soul food restaurant, but it results in unforeseen consequences.
  • “Let’s Nab Oprah” — Ed III, Gin Rummy and Riley try to kidnap Oprah Winfrey.
  • “Riley Wuz Here” — Riley learns to paint from Not Bob Ross after he’s caught painting graffiti on neighbors’ houses.
