I hope there are. Earth being a fluke would be… Weirdly depressing.

I have contemplated writing one of the more intriguing alien encounter stories into my Rats of NIMH fanfiction. Having sapient rats and mice try to figure out supposed extraterrestrial visitors.

We definitely need a J. Posadas article in ProleWiki. I cannot be the change I want to see because I’m not well versed in the topic.

There isn’t one; aliens are not part of human history yet (that we know of), so a historical dialectical materialist analysis can’t be conducted

There’s just no tangible data, only potential likelihoods firmly rooted in stellar physics and biological probabilities

there’s no evidence for either, but do you mean “off somewhere in the universe at all” or “visiting earth”?

kinda hard to have an orthodox position on something that has never been observed.

I speak for all Marxists and the entirety of the theory when I say that I wish Strange New Worlds would have been planned around season long narrative arcs, less Spock struggling with his human half, and less relationships involving Spock.

It’s actually pretty sad that of the recent series most recently released it was Lower Decks that was most faithful to the spirit of prior classics

Oh god please no no one at bad robot knows how to write a plot longer than 43 minutes. They’d have Spock struggling with human emotions and relationships but also gibberish about a time travelling BLUE angel this time

oh damn that’s pretty true. I failed to consider who is writing it. I just kept seeing them bring up interesting sci fi themes or philosophies and then just go “isn’t that weird?” and throw it away after 43 minutes. They could have had a whole season about his wife’s arc. They could have had a whole season about border disputes. This current season could have been a whole season about Pike’s episode 1 predicted death.

Also they could have had Ortegas and La’an on screen for 99% of runtime but they chose not to for some reason.

If we can achieve communism we might be able to interact with aliens someday, if we don’t then we’re gonna turn into another dead region of the universe.

    Probably something akin to this.

in the Soviet Union, they have discovered a ray infinitely faster than light

Posadas just straight up making shit up lmao.

He does have a point that from a thermodynamic point of view: the kinds of compounds that give place to life are more energy efficient than inorganic ones, given the activation energy necessary and the right conditions are provided. Life is more stable than non-life, if life happens to exist in the first place.

Marxism and classic thermodynamics do have a lot of concepts in common, with Marx being very interested in advances in Thermodynamics in the 1800s and adapting some of its ideas to Marxist understanding (I learned this from reading Kohei Saito)

In an infinitely large and complex universe, life existing in multiple places is all but a certainty. Our universe isn’t infinite (as far as we know), but it might as well be. That being said, it makes no epistemological sense to claim “life exists outside of earth”, as it is an unfalsifiable statement unless we have mapped the whole universe out

I wonder what made him say that. Iirc he was a trot but sort of made a cult and fell out of favor with the international trot community (so they split like trots do), but regardless had a negative view of the Soviet Union on trot lines, so I don’t think he was lying to make the SU look more impressive, I think it was an honest mistake, but what particularly produced the mistake?

By the way, which Saito text has that? A long time ago I found out that an old Russian crank wrote about Marxist thermodynamics and published it online, but I looked at the text and the small bits I understood skimming it made sense, but most of it I just couldn’t understand.

old Russian crank wrote about Marxist thermodynamics

I remember this guy, he was trying to reach the same conclusions of thermodynamics through dialectics. Kind of weird crank stuff, didn’t add anything new to either Marxism or thermodynamics AFAIK.

The Saito text that mentions thermodynamics and Marx’s thoughts on classical thermodynamics and the political economy of energy and planetary metabolism was “Karl Marx’s ecosocialism”, which deals with late Marx’s reflections and the unpublished 3rd volume of Capital.

Regarding Posadas writing weird stuff about the SU it’s likely that some kind of distorted version of scientific news from the SU got repeated so much that he actually read “Soviets discover rays faster than light”, when it was some theoretical or particle physics report that didn’t do anything like that. The article was written during the peak of soviet secrecy and paranoia so unfounded rumors must’ve been all over the place

the idea that we are special and earth is the only place to have life is human exceptionalism taken to the extreme.

Aliens coming here though…physics says no. And any aliens that can do it anyway somehow are probably so far advanced that these monkeys over there aren’t particularly interesting any more.

I don’t think there’s one unified Marxist position on most things tbh, since sure Marx had his ideas but lots of people in his time and since have adapted his ideas based on their own different material conditions. Unless you mean specifically “what did Marx say about this” but as a materialist even he would want people to re evaluate what he said because we learn more and things change over time.

I’m not aware of him writing about aliens though at all so. Probably there isn’t one.

Now, do aliens exist in the universe somewhere? It’s statistically very likely. Have they come to earth? That’s almost a statistical impossibility.

Thats my take as well. I totally can see Aliens being real but the overwhelming vast majority of them are probably going to be simple organisms. Not ayy lmaos flying through space.
