What’s the chef cookin’ tonight?

The Boondocks is a 2005-2014 animated sitcom created by Aaron McGruder for Adult Swim, based on his comic strip of the same name. The series is centered on the Freemans, a Black family of two young brothers (Huey and Riley) and their granddad Robert, and follows their let’s say “escapades and misadventures” in white suburbia. The Boondocks is known for its anime-influenced style — particularly borrowing from works like Samurai Champloo — as well as its irreverent satire of Seppolandic politics. It is considered one of the greatest Black cartoons of all time, if not the very greatest, coming about in a perfect storm that allowed for such a radical show to be created.

I had some vague awareness of The Boondocks as a kid, but it wasn’t until I joined Hexbear that I actually sat down and watched the show. And I can aver that it is a banger. And so I want to watch it again, and perhaps introduce it to some new people along the way.

Tonight we’ll be watching the last three episodes of season 1:

  • “Wingmen” — Robert, Huey and Riley go back to Chicago so that Robert can hold a eulogy for his WWII friend Moe, and Huey can try to reconnect with his old friend Cairo.
  • “The Block Is Hot” — A heatwave hits Woodcrest. Jazmine opens a lemonade stand, but becomes looped into a child labor scheme by Ed Wuncler. Huey refuses to take off his winter coat.
  • “The Passion of Reverend Ruckus” — Uncle Ruckus starts a cult dedicated to loving white people, as Huey tries to stop the execution of an innocent man.

This will be followed by four short fanime. The first three are all by MissLadyMeringue, who made My Demon Girlfriend, and the last is by Kawaiiouija, who made Tokyo Magic Star and Terrence Terribly Troubled.

  • The Antagonist (2014-2016, 31 mins) — “Justine Whitfield, who is 19 years old, was able to get in Order’s most profound Fielding Unit, being the only person that managed to qualify. Though, she didn’t want the job in the first place and would’ve preferred the Survey Unit. Regardless, Justine tries her best to think positively. She is also assigned to be a part of a team with her twin brother, Daniel, and his longtime teammate, Lawrence.” We’ll watch all the episodes in a compilation.
  • Nana + Our Life in the Sphinx compilation (17 mins)
    • Nana (2015-2017) — “This is the story of Nana and the life she lives with a banana head.” Originally created for the 2015 12 Hour Fanime Challenge.
    • Our Life in the Sphinx (2014-2015) — “The holy Chinese Sphinx has chosen three kids for sacrifice, and they are doing to their best to survive.” Made for a challenge to see, essentially, who could publish their fanime closest to midnight on New Year’s, and thereby win the title of “last fanime of 2014 / first fanime of 2015”. This challenge had a rule that every entry had to involve a Chinese replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza, which had apparently become a meme in the fanime community.
  • Sweet Sengen (2015, 4 mins) — “a fanime about love, friendship, rivalry, witches, and sweets.” Never continued past its first episode, titled “Prologue : Yue’s Storybook”
