What’s the chef cookin’ tonight?

The Boondocks is a 2005-2014 animated sitcom created by Aaron McGruder for Adult Swim, based on his comic strip of the same name. The series is centered on the Freemans, a Black family of two young brothers (Huey and Riley) and their granddad Robert, and follows their let’s say “escapades and misadventures” in white suburbia. The Boondocks is known for its anime-influenced style — particularly borrowing from works like Samurai Champloo — as well as its irreverent satire of Seppolandic politics. It is considered one of the greatest Black cartoons of all time, if not the very greatest, coming about in a perfect storm that allowed for such a radical show to be created.

I had some vague awareness of The Boondocks as a kid, but it wasn’t until I joined Hexbear that I actually sat down and watched the show. And I can aver that it is a banger. And so I want to watch it again, and perhaps introduce it to some new people along the way.

Tonight we’ll be watching the last three episodes of season 2:

  • “The Story of Gangstalicious Part 2” — Riley starts to dress in an effeminate manner due to influence from his favorite rapper.
  • “The Hunger Strike” — Rollo Goodlove, who you may remember from last week, supports Huey Freeman’s hunger strike against BET.
  • “The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show” — BET decides to film Uncle Ruckus in his day-to-day activities around the city.

These episodes will be followed by two fanime:

  • Blood Raining Night — 2012-2015 drama-romance-action-comedy by ReicheruKetsuekineko. Very bloody-gory compared to most fanime we watch. We’ll watch it as a single 41 minute compilation.
  • Tokyo New Mew — 2011-2012 magical girl fanime by Slammfire. Later continued as a webcomic under the title Aqua Mew Mew. Naturally, the fanime didn’t continue past episode 2 part 1. We’ll be watching the whole thing as a 17 minute compilation.

And Magic Heart and the Magical Warriors if we have time for it.

Plot descriptions from Fanime Realm:

Blood Raining Night:

Reicheru is a young 17 year old girl who finds herself fighting her father after he comes back from the dead, but the story just begins there: the fate of the world lies within her and her daughter’s hands. So, is forgiveness a necessity or a curse?

Tokyo New Mew:

Earth, year 2050: home to 10 billion people and roughly 8.7 million animal species. It has been 30 years since life was restored to the planet from Mew Aqua. There was peace and prosperity, all walks of life flourished. However, the precious element disappeared from us and from the world. No one knew where it came from, or how to get it back. Now, the horizon gives way to new heroes. Time is running out. The rest is up to you, Tokyo Mew Mew!
