The Radio Pirates (2007)

The Radio Pirates or Radiopiratene is a 2007 Norwegian children’s film directed by Stig Svendsen in his feature film directorial debut, adapting a 2002 radio play by Gunnar Germundson. What’s notable about this movie is that I actually watched it in school as a kid myself, as one of the first movies I watched in school; and moreover, I somehow came under the misapprehension that the bad guy in the movie was then-prime minister (later head of NATO) Jens Stoltenberg played by himself. Needless to say, no, they don’t even look very similar, but to my child self All Uptight Old White Men In Suits Are The Same. In any case, that memory was why I was interested in rewatching this movie now as an adult, but this movie could also be an interesting glimpse into the place of pirate radio in Norway’s collective cultural memory (this movie would’ve been from the era of Radio Luxembourg nostalgia, right?); attitudes towards pirate radio, authority, and individuality in Norwegian kids’ media of the 2000s; and I’ve also just read that this movie is a pretty entertaining wild ride that I don’t remember much from.

Plot description from English Wikipedia:

The Radio Pirates is the story of Karl Jonathan and his father. They leave the city for the father’s dilapidated childhood home but soon realise that the entire village of “Skjelleruten” has been transformed into the ultimate safe society, where children are strictly protected from behaving like children. Karl Jonathan and his new friend, Sisseline, start an uprising against this model village with the aid of a closed-down pirate radio. But the model citizens refuse to give in without a fight.

What is an abridged series? (quoting Wikipedia)

An “abridged series” is a fanmade parody that uses video footage from a television series—oftentimes Japanese animation—which is usually filled with comedic redubbing. They are called “abridged” series because episodes are usually not as long as the original episodes or tend to shorten events to meld two or more episodes together, making them a comedic summation of events. The first abridged series, Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Abridged Series, was created by Bea Billany, better known by her screen name LittleKuriboh, in 2006. […] Since most abridged series are uploaded to YouTube, they are occasionally subject to copyright takedowns by parent companies.

Scootertrix the Abridged

Scootertrix the Abridged is a 26-episode 2014-2019 abridged series created by Jack Getschman of Scootertrix Studios, hence the name. It’s my impression that Scootertrix is the other major MLP:FiM abridged series aside from Friendship is Witchcraft. Or rather, Friendship is Witchcraft was the big abridged series for the early years of the brony fandom, and Scootertrix for the later years of the fandom, with the post-Twilicorn mid-2010s as a transitional period when both series were releasing new episodes. The fact that Scootertrix is associated with the later years of the brony fandom is significant, as Scootertrix in fact makes references to the abridged series that came before it and subverts their tropes. This is said to be the thing that sets Scootertrix apart. Scootertrix also crossed over with other MLP:FiM abridged series several times. Scootertrix the Abridged is furthermore notable for its use of the fourth wall as an integral part of its story arc, which starts out as a typical MLP:FiM parody before gradually diverging its plot from MLP:FiM and actually kinda taking itself seriously.
