“We haven’t eaten them yet because we’re awaiting approval for testing in humans,” said Jayakody, before a presentation of the work on Monday at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago.
Cowards, eat the chemistry cookie
Gotta respect a researcher who does their own testing:

Commitment to the bit.

i hate bureaucrats and i cannot imagine the thought process or mentality behind making something with the intention for it to be safe to eat only to wait for some nerd who necessarily knows less about the thing you made than you did to say “ok it’s fine to test on humans”
edit: to eat on your on i mean not test on people anyway

I remember when I was a bleeding heart liberal I had this project in college where I was thinking about how to get biofuels to be economically competitive with fossil fuels. A flawed premise, but clearly they were trying to do good in the world. One of the papers I was using was using some kind of waste sugar to fuel them. I don’t think I can find the exact one but
Utilization of biodiesel-derived glycerol or xylose for increased growth and lipid production by indigenous microalgae
Is close. Much of the study was about perfecting the algae that they were using, not indigenous microalgae.
Microbes are little expert chemists and the composition of triglycerides, glucose, and amino acids are well understood. We can use, if memory serves, E. coli to synthesize insulin. We can use microbes to eat plastic.
Sounds sound to me.
as an aside
One time I worked in a lab to study what happens when you give people ivermectin for viral defense in Africa. Made COVID a really weird time when everyone was calling it horse paste.
Fuck it I’ll eat the plastic if it means everyone can eat
Grapes of Wrath scene where they hose all the plastic down with acetone
I don’t like this simulated world you created in my mind.
Coming to an America near you
But you wouldnt be eating plastic! The yeast would eat the plastic and use it to multiply. You’d be eating yeast.
Oh, then I’m out
Computer, yeast paste, room temperature

Oi mate, you got a loicense for that bathtub Marmite?
We already produce enough real food to feed everyone.
now we have more!
Yeast products made from otherwise non degradable plastic sounds pretty great, what’s the issue
Unknown additives might be a problem
That is a problem with literally any food made under capitalism
turning plastic into something i can eat is an intriguing idea. it says proteins, fats, and flavorings too so like… tendies with honey mustard?
if you tell me i could recycle plastic and protect the environment while eating taste-alike trash food, they are gonna need to cut a hole in the side of my house and a crane to retrieve my body.
what would happen if the plastic-digesting microbes escaped into the world
This is the unstated goal of everyone working with these microbes. Plastic biodegradation through microbiota.
When it happens, it’s not going to be a problem for things like your vacuum cleaner or phone case but it will mean that plastics in landfills or lost at the bottom of a gorge will break down.
What about all the plastic in my body?! This micro biota you speak off can pry it out of my cold, dead flesh. It’s not much but this plastic is MINE.
Also one of the goals!
“This microbiota can pry the microplastics from my flesh!”

vs
“This microbiota can pry the microplastics from my flesh!”

yeah i know, i’d be mostly concerned about sensitive stuff like medical equipment
There are two main types of plastic-eating microbes. One consumes polyolefin plastics like Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). The other consumes polyester plastics like polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
They’re mutually exclusive, so at least there’s that? Durable medical equipment isn’t going to be impacted very strongly, but it might necessitate seal integrity indicators for disposable and sealed-sterile equipment.
We already upgrading to macroplastics?
that’s kinda neat. unfortunately recycling isn’t a tech problem, it’s a societal investment problem, and I don’t see this moving the needle in that respect if it works.
thanks but no thanks, NASA
Gonna snack on a bag of poker chips
bugs are sounding better every day
I knew this would happen the moment liberals had the “The homeless should be happy to get my leftovers” discourse.
