We all deserve better than the pope. If you are an American trans person you are currently the victim of that asshole, he has directly made your life worse. If you are a trans person anywhere he’s also made your life worse, but less directly.

Protestants should be done with the fucking pope and the catholic church, it’s kinda the whole point of being a protestant isn’t it? Like if they actually gave a shit about listening to the pope they’d just be Catholics no? Shouldn’t they be busy with their “personal relationship with god” and having their own individual interpretations of the bible (which most haven’t read beyond cherry-picked out-of-context passages that support their worldview)?

I have my criticisms of the sect I was raised in but thank fucking god at least they didn’t give a flying fuck about the pope

edit: adding more: Like if you aren’t a catholic why does the pope have any special spiritual weight? Either you believe he’s Gods Chosen Representative on Earth and therefore you should just be a catholic or you disagree with that and the pope is just a guy in Rome (or sometimes Avignon) with a silly hat and way too much power

My understanding is that many Orthodox churches recognise the Pope as the Patriarch of Rome.

Protestants do not like Catholics one bit, like they’ll play nice with them on community events/outreach, but if you get them behind closed doors you will get to hear a lot of very interesting takes they have on the Catholics.

Oh that’s been my whole life due to my ancestors being persecuted by the Catholic Church, we know how to hold a grudge lol I was just remarking on this reverend joker talking about protestants being “done with the modern papacy” like they should care in the first place

He doesn’t. Zero. I grew up Protestant (it didn’t take, I had good Critical Thinking Skills from the start), and I never heard one word about the Pope. He was the Catholics’ guy, not our problem. He had absolutely no influence on my family or anyone at church.

When a new Pope gets crowned, or whatever, there’s no spiritual feeling about it at all, no excitement or hope for the future of the church or humanity, no connection with God, etc., it’s just something the Catholics are up to this week.

MAGAs get all upset when celebrities and religious figures call out their corruption and hypocrisy, unless the celebrities and religious figures are on their side, then it’s violating their free speech.

I know this place has a weird fondness for the catholic church and a weird hate boner for protestants but posting reaction images from the fucking spanish inquisition is some clown shit.

That image is of a woman who was sentenced to death, and after refusing to name others to be executed, was instead stuffed with gunpowder and lit on fucking fire.

I will not condemn liberation theology, even if its efficacy may not be the greatest, and even if there are only about 5 of them left. I will point out that whenever there was a conflict involving any kind of progressive social movement within catholicism, the church always sided with the people trying to stamp them out. The catholic church would rather side with genocidal protestants than socialist catholics and it has shown this repeatedly.

And if we are to look at the legacy of liberation theology and so forth, why not look to the history of black protestant churches in the struggle against white supremacy? Why does one matter but the other does not?

I firmly believe its cultural cringe and this site being majority from protestant dominated cultures, same as with the opposition to stated atheism.

I don’t think anyone here is going to defend the historical record of the Catholic church. I think it’d be hard to find people who would say the church is a net positive force as it stands today.

What I see is a combination of people posting some decent takes from the pope on one single issue, and then laughing at the horrible right-wing reactions that result. The focus is on even the Catholic church outflanking almost the entire U.S. political class from the left.

I’m not disagreeing with you here, other than it’s not ‘cultural cringe’, as I despise that particular framework. It is a vestigial contrarian impulse, not born out of any particular historical examination.

It’s ‘trolling’ but trolling doesn’t actually build anything.

Actual apologia or “Papists are better than Prods?” It’s a definitely true statement for occupied Ireland where the Indigenous Irish are Catholic while the settler Brits are Protestants. It’s mostly true in the US too since both Catholic and Evangelical clergy engage in rampant pedophilia, but the Catholic laity has slightly better politics than the Evangelical laity.

Im not gonna restart old beefs or call out anyone in specific. But I have seen both people saying that they “critically support” the Catholic Church (not as a joke) and making explicit carve outs for the catholic church in arguments. I think i even took up the argument once or twice, so its probably in my history somewhere. But I’m not gonna go looking. I’d rather be assumed wrong by the people who want to start a fight over this than start the fight.

Think it might be from Chapo influencing the culture against Protestantism. Like an echo from their influence or Matt Christman’s influence via their takes on Christianity.

    All religions really

And people who don’t wipe down the machines after they use them at the gym

I think I’m in a toxic relationship with Christianity. Its teachings and pressures have nearly driven me to death multiple times, but it’s been so drilled into me it’s hard to let go of. I’m getting there but only slowly and painfully.

We’ve got some cool Christians on here actually they just keep a low profile. There’s even a history of left wing activism in the church here in the US. Nuns and priests used to break in to draft offices to burn registration cards. Jessica Rezniceck is a Catholic worker.

They don’t get a lot of press obviously bc chuds vastly outnumber them but I wouldn’t paint with so broad of a brush

Yeah, yeah. And Oskar Schindler is listed as Righteous Among the Nations. The record of the Catholic church is still one of largely genocide and oppression. Those Catholics are still choosing to associate themselves with a deeply evil, regressive organisation.

I don’t hate individual Catholics/members of other churches who nevertheless choose to do good, but those organisations are absolutely indefensible regardless.
